Library Mission activity – Larry

Larry led the group through an activity to identify the most important attributes of a new MLS Mission statement.

Department Updates: 

Business Office: nothing to report

Development & Volunteer Services:

- The Friends of the Library board voted to dissolve the Special Friends of Ralph Ellison.   

- The Friends are now having to pay for recycling of discards and unsold book sale books.

    • Executive Director performance review forms distributed to LT for completion and submission by Nov 15, 2019. Results are anonymous and will be aggregated and shared with Commission and the Executive Director in Dec 2019.

    • Discussion of proposed procedural changes, resulting in approval by LT.

Learning & Development Update

  • Discussed staff day theme for 2019. Milissa presented ideas for a staff day theme. Leadership team consensus was “building together for tomorrow”. We want to emphasize the importance of working together as a team and this is relevant in all departments whether public services or support departments.

Opportunity for Exhibition:

Julie Ballou shared that MLS may have an opportunity to apply for a traveling exhibit through ALA. This exhibit would have a lower cost to show and utilize than the Sendak exhibit and will be a strong fit for MLS.

Room Use:

Chris Kennedy distributed an early draft of new room use guidelines for library customers who rent and reserve library spaces.

Core Values Conversation:

A draft of revised core values was distributed for discussion.

Friends grant process and gift policy

Heather Zeoli presented ideas for streamlining the Friends grant process.

Heather also reminded everyone that the library system itself cannot accept monetary donations directly; and clarified that gifts of materials and physical items belong to the Friends, not to individual libraries nor the system, and may not be added to collections.

The Leadership Team talked about Freedom to Learn- We treasure and protect each member’s freedom to read, view, and learn in order to achieve his/her highest potential. The Regional Directors shared feedback from the Public Services Manager’s meeting and the staff meetings. Overall this is a core value everyone believes should stay but there may be some changes in language to it.
