Does a customer need to provide his/her birthdate?

Birth date on a customer’s record is one of the required fields in Carl*X and it has several benefits for the customer and our system alike. Not only does a birth date assist with demographic information we can use for statistical analysis for materials and programs, but it also helps protect the customer when and if their library account becomes compromised. For instance, if a minor presents a library card with a birth year of 1958 you know there is a potential problem.

Circulation Forum Minutes - November 2014

Welcome

Julie welcomed those that came to the forum and reminded everyone to share what they learned with the staff at their libraries.

Customer Service Recovery – Julie Ballou (DN)

A customer service failure is an instance where a customer’s expectation of service is not met.

Julie shared with everyone two instances where she personally experienced a customer service failure and the resulting customer service recovery.

Does the customer need to fill out a new application when completing this birthday upgrade?

Yes. When a child turns 17 they are considered an adult cardholder and become financially responsible for the items checked out on his/her card. They will need to complete a new application where he/she will sign as the account owner. The customer does not need a new card unless he/she don’t want to keep their child’s card. No fee is charged for the new card as long as they are trading in the other card.

SH 300.2 Administrative Procedure on Filing of Applications

This procedure is to reaffirm the library's policy on promotion or transfer of employees with less than six months' tenure in a current position.

Circulation Forum Minutes - February 2014

Customer Service Presentation
Stacy Schrank introduced Jim Friedemann who led the group in a two-hour workshop on “Principles of WOW: Customer Service Excellence”.

Q&A: Questions received via email were read and discussed.
What is the general consensus of how to address customers who are just library business acquaintances? For example, should John Jones be called Mr. Jones or John?

Most of the circulation clerks said it depends on the customer and how well they feel they know the customer. The general consensus is that it is more professional and respectful to use Mr. Jones (or Ms. Smith, etc.) unless you know the customer personally or have been given permission by them to use their first name.
