Database Highlight #15: We've got the Font for That

It’s National Dyslexia Awareness Month! Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability “characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.” – International Dyslexia Association 2002 definition.  National Institute of Health research shows that dyslexia affects 5-10% of the population. It is the most common cause of reading difficulty in elementary school children.

Zinio app shutting down October 23rd

Members who use the Zinio have one week to migrate over to RBdigital’s new app. Starting on October 23rd, the Zinio app will no longer be accessible. Members who try opening the app will receive the message “Zinio for Libraries has merged with RBdigital. To access your magazine collection, please download the new RBdigital app now by clicking here*. Note: Your username and password will remain the same.”

Overdrive adds reading history

Members who have requested to see lists of ebook/eaudio they’ve checked out will be happy to hear Overdrive has added Your History. When a member checks out a book, the title will automatically be added to the History. Members also have the option of adding titles manually. While members history lists aren’t shared with Overdrive or MLS, members who have privacy concerns are able to delete titles manually. There’s also an option to ‘hide’ history for those who simply don’t like clutter.

Kay met with library staff at some locations to update them on system matters and to listen to staff feedback. Her goal is to meet with every library and department prior to Staff Development Day (Oct 9). 

Database Highlight #14 - We've Got the Underground for That

October is LGBTQ History Month and October 11th is National Coming Out day. Of course, the country wasn’t always so open to a free expression of sexuality and gender. The Archives of Sexuality, this week’s database highlight, is a collection of ‘zines, newsletters, articles, and images from the 1940s to present day.

Database Highlight #13: We've got the Cure for That

Amidst the coming candy frenzy, October is Health Month. So with a nod to health awareness, this week’s database highlight is Consumer Health Complete. With patients/laypeoples' needs in mind, Consumer Health Complete provides information in clear language through an easy-to-discover interface. Members can browse or use the keyword/topic search for books, pamphlets, news, drug information and more.
