Compensation, Classification and Benefits Study: Background

In late 2010, Metropolitan Library System hired The Singer Group, a Baltimore-based human resources consulting firm, to conduct a study to review our compensation and classification systems as well as our benefits programs.  The ultimate goal of the study was to ensure that all of these systems were internally and externally equitable, allowing MLS to recruit and retain staff successfully.

Changes to VCirc regarding System Reserves

With the introduction of self-pickup of reserves, there has been an increase of customers taking reserves that don't belong to them, taking the labels off and then bringing them to the circulation desk. When self-pickup was first introduced, both VCirc and the Express Checkout did not let customers check out reserves that were not reserved on their card. However, staff requested that this be removed from VCirc because family members checked out for each other and they felt the block was more of a problem than a help so the block was removed from VCirc.

Class and Comp Study Update/Appeals Process

Dear staff:

All along in the classification and compensation study the administration has indicated that no employee’s current pay would be affected.  No one would earn less than they currently were.    I’m now in a position to talk more about compensation and how it will affect future pay.

As you will recall from information that was previously sent to you, five positions were recommended by the consultants to be lowered one grade.

There are currently nine employees in the five positions with these job titles.
