CURRENT ITEMS

ALA Report. Denyvetta reported on the ALA Conference she attended in New Orleans. She Handed out copies of informational material form the conference. One handout entitled “Library Services for the Poor” and the other entitled “Classism in the Stacks”. Discussion followed. While in New Orleans, Denyvetta also attended a Town Hall meeting, regarding the impact Katrina had on libraries, she passed around information from that meeting.

Denyvetta reported she has been elected to the black caucus “Librarians of Color”. The first joint conference will be in Texas in October.

REPORTS

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT – Todd reported 14 sites have been identified as possible site for a Northwest Library. Within the next two weeks those possibilities will be narrowed down to five sites.

FINANCE & SUPPORT – The quarterly employee retirement meeting was held last week. Attendance was down from previous meeting. Lloyd will be scheduling another set of meeting in November.

The Business Office is closing out the year end. Monday will be the first day of the fiscal year.

FACILITIES MAINTENANCE – Patrick reported the Janitorial contract transition is in place as well as the lawn care transition.

Work has been completed in the mens restroom at Ralph Ellison.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS – The announcement for a Graphic Designer in Marketing has been posted.

Kim is working on a new dress code policy.

The magazine is out now; the next issue will be out in October.

MATERIALS & OUTREACH – Karen stated she have received the “Overdrive” proposal for downloadable audio books and will begin working on that.

OUTREACH – Dana reported summer reading numbers are sky rocketing. There have already been 10,000 sign ups within the first two weeks..

LIBRARY OPERATIONS AND PLANNING – Stu is working on a couple of summer reading surveys. One will be for staff and one for the public to complete. The surveys will be available online and as a handout in the libraries.

LIBRARY OPERATIONS – Denyvetta passed around a copy of the Ralph Ellison Friends Newsletter.
