Encouraging Ongoing Participation

While increasing sign-ups for Summer Reading is important, many customers never log back in to add their points. For others, participation starts strong but decreases as the summer goes on. Logging reading or activities is the only way to for customers to earn prizes, to meet our Community Goal, and is one of the main indicators of the program’s success. Help keep customers engaged in logging their activity so they can earn and redeem their rewards by continuing to talk to them about the program over the summer.

  1. Start logging! Walk customers through logging their minutes. They can begin logging their time when registration opens, although it won’t count towards Summer Reading goals until June 1.
  2. Many ways to Log! Remind customers that they can log their reading in different ways depending on what is easiest for them; the Beanstack App, online at www.metrolibrary.org/summerreading, or on paper. Staff or volunteers can also help estimate and log reading time for those who have forgotten to track their reading.
  3. No title necessary! Make sure customers know they only need to list the time they read. This can be helpful for parents of young children that might read multiple pictures books in one sitting.
  4. Think beyond the book! Remind people that newspapers, magazines, and audiobooks all count towards minutes!
  5. Don’t wait! If customers are interested, have them sign up immediately. If you can’t personally help them then connect them with the next point of service, such as the Beanstack App on their phone or a catalog computer.
