Summer Reading Volunteers

Teen Volunteers
We are excited to have our teen volunteers join us for summer fun at our libraries; we couldn't do Summer Reading without them!
This year's opportunities for teen volunteers will include job shadowing, inviting guests to sign up for Summer Reading, helping with programs, shelving/shelf reading/putting carts in order, and more!
We’re excited to engage with our volunteers and offer them the opportunity to not only fulfill hours needed for school and extracurriculars but provide them valuable workforce experience.
Teen volunteer supervisors, make sure to check out the following resources available to you in our Volunteer Supervisor SharePoint as you plan for this summer: 2024 Summer Volunteers.
Summer Volunteer Overview – Essentials for Staff
Sign up:
-
Potential volunteers visit https://www.metrolibrary.org/volunteer and choose “Search Opportunities” or click here for summer volunteer opportunities.
-
Volunteers select a 30-minute interview slot and complete the online application to register.
-
Interview days and times vary by library and are scheduled individually.
-
Interviews run April – May depending on the location needs and volunteer opportunities available.
-
-
Library Staff will confirm the interview day, time, and location with the volunteer either by email or phone within 72 hours.
-
As part of the registration process, a Parent/Guardian waiver is generated through email for parental permission.
Next Steps:
-
Following the interview and receipt of the parent/guardian waiver, Library Staff will contact Volunteer Services to have the volunteer approved and placed.
-
Volunteers will sign up for a Summer Reading Training at their location (days and times are location specific).
-
Volunteers will choose shifts and sign up for schedule slots at their location using their volunteer log in.
Troubleshooting:
-
Volunteer completes an application, received a confirmation but no other communication has occurred. Typically, this happens when a volunteer registers without selecting an interview slot. (Staff will not be notified of the volunteer application because no location was indicated.) Solution: Heidi Port will send an email to the volunteer directing them to visit https://www.metrolibrary.org/volunteer and select an interview slot.
-
Volunteer calls or emails and cannot make their interview/training/schedule slot at their location. Solution: Request their name, phone, and email address and put them in touch with their location/Summer Supervisor (see list below).
-
Volunteer is getting an error message when signing up or logging in. Solution: put them in contact with either their supervising librarian or Heidi Port to research and resolve.
