- Dana Morrow—future programs
- Alfalfa Bill shows are going very well. We have learned that he likes snacks.
- The Our World programs this year in November will be classical music of India. We should all do some local marketing in nearby stores, restaurants & markets. Next year’s Our World program will be Tuva throat singers.
- Spring Fling programs for 08 will be Ethno Tech Asian Treasure Bag, which will be traditional Asian stories. In 09 it will be zydeco music.
- In Oct 08 we’ll have a program that travels around like Alfalfa Bill is doing this year; it will be an Aborigine elder to come & tell traditional Australian
stories. - Julianna should ask Bob Leveridge whether he knows some native storytellers or speakers about Oklahoma history.
- Susan Ryan—new info about databases
- There are really good updates on the African American History Online database produced by Facts on File, including video clips and other files. She
has a great handout about that. - Reference USA—let’s collect some success stories (really, about this or any database).
- To track the use of any database, use the old “Mr Winn” program on the staff computers. Follow these steps:
- Multitrieve
- ILS multiuse reports
- CyberMars usage, then page down (a lot) for current dates
- Classes will be held at BE for customers just on use of databases.
- We should all share success stories with the Info Magazine as well as with Susan
- Anita Roesler—Winter Readfest
- Last year Outreach spent over $5,000 on bags and $3000 on prizes
- Anita will get 1 gift card for every 50 people signed up at a branch this next time
- Anne suggests that Outreach put together a short training PowerPoint presentation on Winter ReadFest on the intranet
- The program will continue to be February and March
- This next year’s brochures and drawing cards will not be attached
- Fans—Anita got these marketing tools and they were passed out at the ball park. Big hit! She shared some with us & we played with them all. Very nice!
Break & Wii Demonstration
We can get the Wii demonstrated at any adult program or seniors program that we may need in order to introduce this fun technology. Great for physical movement—can be taken to outside locations as well as to branches. Someone from Outreach will come with it & set it up. This would also be a good arrangement to introduce during some kinds of computer training—just to give people a feel for the fun that can be had with the technology. - Sharing
- Dana - Scott Turow is the next endowment event author! Dana also shares the idea to create a book discussion group blog, where we can share the titles read and comments/strategies for book groups.
- Darrie - National Inventors’ Month displays, Defensive Driving, GED classes, book club in their 7 th year (wow!), parenting class, Books on Trial program, Centennial Tribute program featured Oklahoma poets laureate. *One customer was particularly proud of the free poetry book that Carl Sennhenn gave him for free at the book signing, and he carries it around (way to go)! Southern Oaks branch has some big technology to give away for their customer appreciation drawing.
- Kelly - Sept was WA’s 40 th anniversary, so they had a special program on a Sunday, called Sundaes on Sunday. They opened for a couple of hours, served ice cream and had the Heart and Soul musical group. They had 150 people in 2 hours. They hosted someone from the OU Western History Center for a program about historical photos of Oklahoma. Their customer appreciation has a western theme, with western pictures for kids to color & local restaurant coupons. In December they’ll have a holiday program done by a group to help people with coping during difficult holiday times, and also a holiday musical program. They have about 12 members of their book group. The Alfalfa Bill program went very well & the best part was people telling stories about how they knew the real person!
- Beth - September was the first month that MC was doing programs of her own design. She has started up a book group and has chosen a couple of interesting titles. She has started up some poetry readings where people are encouraged to bring their own work or read some of their favorites. In the future, Beth would like to do a program about getting poetry published. They have computer classes every Thursday morning at MC done by the tech person. They’ve recently done programs on monarch butterflies and driver safety. In November Beth has planned a large event—a health fair—with numerous community organizations, booths, prizes, health screenings. Dana & Anita reminded us all that when we want to publicize large events like this, we can get mailing lists from some software used in Outreach.
- Julianna - Continuing classes at VI are tai chi, Spanish, and monthly computer sessions. The students in the Spanish class are enthusiastic and vocal! VI has a book discussion group every 3 rd Monday at the branch and one at Town Village retirement home. We had a good crowd for the Singing Zoologist program in Sept & we’re looking forward to the Alfalfa Bill program on Friday. Our edition of OK Voices is also coming up during the 4 th week of October. We are giving away prize baskets filled with Oklahoma products.
- Susie - They are hosting a class for conceal/carry permits, which already has 50 people signed up (whew!). They’ve done a Caregivers at Risk program in conjunction with the VoTech schools—the program was listed in the VoTech publications as well as advertised through the library (good idea!). Rose State came to do a program called Getting Ready for College. A historical reenactor with some experience at the OK History Center came to do a Civil War program which was well attended by students and scouts with lots of good questions. We are all reminded that the History Center and the OU speakers’ bureau have some excellent presenters to choose from. CT will host a genealogy program in November and a Wayne McEvilly music concert on Nov 6. Susie also shared that students can get “attendance credit” for attending library programs. Librarians need to contact the school district’s curriculum coordinator in order to do paperwork beforehand; information about the program’s length & content should be explained. This will ensure good attendance for programs geared for students.
- Anne - Robert Mulcahy did a program about his FBI experiences. The attendance was 40! The soapmaking program was good, but she learned to ask the presenter to prepare her own copies, since the handouts were so long. Anne said she’d email us about an upcoming forestry service program. The BI holiday programs will include music by Wayne McEvilly and the Horse Shoe Road group. Also, she is planning a program about coping with “holiday blues” (with a happier title) like the one planned by WA.
- Sharon - BE hosted an artist who does lifesized art and set design; she did a piece called “Pioneer Woman.” BE also had a very successful yoga program for 4 weeks. As part of their customer appreciation, BE is giving away centennial magnets, throw rug, books for kids, and family passes to the zoo. On Nov 1 they’ll have mariachi music and events marked the Day of the Dead.
- Harry and Darlene - Lunar New Year series of programs planned for February on the 4 th floor DN. They’ll have videos playing, dragon dancers, calligraphy, Asian film night, information booths, and (they hope) some food brought from restaurants. Phyllis recently did a great genealogy program on PowerPoint, which she is willing to travel to share at branches (yay!). DN hosted some speakers for Banned Books week. The event to honor Bob Burke, the author of many OK books, had to be rescheduled for December; Jane Jarrow is scheduled to speak. During the Centennial parade this Sunday, Wayne McEvilly is scheduled to do a concert. In November, DN has some Indian drumming and storytelling programs
coordinated with the childrens’ library staff. - Melissa - She mentions that Sam is planning to host a Vegan cooking program at DC, for which he will be the chef.
- Thanks for all you’ve shared!
- David Farris—explained the contents of his Oklahoma Outlaws program that he offers for $50. He is coming to ED on 10/23 to do his Eerie Tales of Oklahoma program. He is particularly interested in doing programs for 89er time in April 08.
- The next time we meet will be the ASL retreat on January 16. Send topics/burning issues/questions/ideas to Anita and she’ll put them on the agenda.Da
