Adult Services Minutes for May 2004

Anita Roesler, Senior Services Coordinator, welcomed all present to the meeting.

Thanks to Darrie for all the refreshments and arrangements.

Darlene Browers was welcomed to the group as a new DN Adult Programmer. We’re glad to have you with us Darlene!

Lifetime Readers:

  • Anita passed around the final number of the readers in the program. As well as how to place the information on the MLS Room Manager. A sample sheet was passed out for clarity. The total participants were 711.
  • The Metro magazines will be mailed out by marketing for those that indicated they wanted them mailed to their home. June will be the first month they will be mailed out. Jeanne from MAC said her goal is for them to arrive by the 1st of the month.

Misc.

  • A list of all the programmers was sent out for everyone’s information.
  • A list was sent out of all the upcoming programmer’s meeting sites for confirmation purposes. The adult programmer’s retreat is anticipated to be in January @ the new DN library.
  • Anita asked who all was planning on doing a “Read & Discuss” for the Oklahoma Reads Oklahoma winner, “The Honk and Holler is Opening Soon” by Billie Letts. Anita also noted that Ms. Letts has a new book coming out, “Shoot the Moon” that is on order in the MLS.
  • Anita passed out the new list of Oklahoma Reads Oklahoma. This was made available at OLA.
  • Dana discussed the latest Fancy Dancers tour through the MLS. Dana asked that we put our programming statistics in monthly in the MLS Room Manager.
  • The new MLS logo was presented.
  • Info. on the new DN library: Outreach may be moving into the building around the third week of June.
  • Metro Tech Classes: There have not been very large turn outs for the classes, but Metro Tech wants to continue to have them.
  • The DN library has Bingo Software that can be used to make all types of bingo cards (even library related). Maybe could be used as part of a tour.

 

SHARING:

  • Anita-(OUT) Anita attended the Senior Expo in March and April. Sharon, Kelley and Kalyhani attended some sessions with her. Anita has also written a grant to the Friends for next year’s Lifetime Reader’s Project.
  • Shellie (DC) She announced that she will be leaving the MLS by mid-August. Her husband finished his Ph.D. and obtained a position at the Univ. of Southern Mississippi.
  • Rondia (WA) Held a home buying class with Denise Edwards of Caldwell Bankers. In June, they will be holding a CPR certification class.
  • Darlene (DN) Applied for an ALA grant to have a “Let’s Talk About it Oklahoma” on Jewish Literature for next spring.
  • Linda (VI) VI continues to hold Intermediate Spanish Classes. They held a “Let’s Talk About it” series on Generation to Generation. They averaged about 5 people at each session. They are planning yoga for older adults, as well as Tai Chi with Mickey Sherman.
  • Dana (OUT) There will be a New Zealand dancer troupe in November. Their budget is slated for 10 libraries.
  • Phyllis (DN) no senior programming as of late due to the DN move.
  • Sharon (BE) There was a recent complaint of the Harry Potter Book series. Sharon wondered if any other branches have had any challenges of this series lately. No one else has of yet. They had a good turn out for the fancy dancers of Oklahoma. They will be having an upcoming Orchid Program and Mickey Sherman (Tai Chi). A Lady Liberty tea is also scheduled.
  • Marsha (CT) They will be holding an OSU Horticultural Program, as well as Mickey Sherman for Tai Chi. The students of the Spanish classes have not been happy with the pace of the class. The Bookclub will be starting up again too.
  • Ronna (ED) They will be holding the medieval festival again. The Bookclub is going strong as well. They will also be having Mickey Sherman for Tai Chi. They also held an adult comedy improv class that was well received. A Katherine Hepburn impersonator will also be a program.
  • Kelly (WA) Atteneded the Senior Expo with Anita. The Coffee Talks continue.
  • Darrie (SO) A program was held for the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. the board of Education.
  • Kelley (OUT) Kelley reminded everyone of the Artist/Presenter Database. Please remember to fill the form out and give it to Kelley. Especially for background checks.
  • Sharon (RE) April held an open mic for poetry month. Great attendance. The May 1st African American Dance was cancelled. Juneteenth preparations are coming along.
  • Kalyani (CH) There was a craft program in April on making Yarn flowers. They held an Internet basics class. Having Tai Chi with Mickey Sherman. A program about diabetes for seniors is also scheduled.
  • Susan (Mat. Sel.)- Will be adding Proquest Heitage Quest (and it will be available in remote use). Newsbank is being cancelled, ebsco has a better alternative to this. If you have specific feedback about the usage, please contact Susan.

 

PERFORMERS

Jean Stover: Dustbowl Granny
Jean did a demonstration of a character that she performs, the dustbowl granny.

Linda Webb: Therapy Dogs
Linda brought a therapy dog with her and discussed some of the programming that would go along with bringing a therapy dog for a program.

Sean Chandler: author of “Ebony Marshall”
Sean discussed the book he wrote and how he came to write it. It was discussed that he may be open to doing a program on how to write and publish your own work as well.

The next meeting will be July 14 at the Choctaw Library (1-4pm)
