ReadOKC

ReadOKC Overview & Talking Points

What is ReadOKC?

ReadOKC is an initiative of The Oklahoma City Public Schools Compact; their primary mission is to create and stimulate ownership of OKCPS and its outcomes. It is comprised of Oklahoma City Public Schools, the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, the United Way of Central Oklahoma, and the City of Oklahoma City.

Partners include: Metropolitan Library System, Scholastic, myON, Bricktown Ballpark, OKC Thunder, Energy, Dodgers, Sonic.

What does ReadOKC do?

ReadOKC's goal is to promote the love of reading for the students of OKCPS and in our community. The program is in its second year, and they now offer reading challenges during the summer, fall, winter, and spring breaks to encourage OKCPS students to stay engaged with reading even when they aren't at school.

Components of ReadOKC:

  1. Reading challenges
  2. Reading buddies
  3. Little libraries

Summer 2021

Read for 20 minutes a day for a total of 1,860 minutes this summer. Students who meet this reading goal will be eligible for prizes and recognition – as well as limit the “summer brain drain” and be ready to return to school! OKCPS Students who read 1,860 minutes or more will score Big Prizes this fall! Students should log their minutes online using MyOn or by using the reading log below. Logs should be turned in when students return to school in the fall.

What to do if schools say they are already doing ReadOKC’s summer challenge:

The library is a part of ReadOKC! We’d just like the opportunity to share the scope of our Summer Reading program, the additional prizes kids can earn, and all the free virtual programs the library is offering, like music, art, and STEAM programs.
Summer Reading is free and for all ages. The whole family can get involved in our program!
Students can use any reading log (including the one for school) and can earn prizes at the library, too.

New this year:

  • OKCPS and MLS are both using Beanstack, which includes a tandem feature that allows users to link separate library and school accounts.
  • OKCPS students have access to our libraries through ONEcard. We want to make sure kids and teens know they can have access to books, all kinds of materials, downloads, computers, wi-fi, and more.
