  1. Libraries may accept donations of new or used books/materials from donors with the intent to be sold. These donations will be sold by the Friends of the Metropolitan Library System (Friends) for benefit of the Metropolitan Library System (Library).
    1. Donors are requested to bring no more than 2 to 3 bags or boxes of materials at a time to a library location. For larger donations, donors are encouraged to donate directly at the FOL Sort Site. Donors may be directed to: www.supportmls.org/fol/donatematerials
    2. Donors are to be given a signed donation receipt by the library staff member who received the materials. The signature need not be legible. Per IRS regulations, the donor is responsible for estimating the value of their donation to the IRS. Donor receipt forms are available from the office of Development and Volunteer Services (DVS) or can be printed from the intranet: https://my.metrolibrary.info/drupal/document/fol-printable-tax-receipt-slip
    3. Neither the Friends nor the Library maintain a record of materials donated to the Friends.
    4. Donated materials are to be placed in identified Friends collection bins at library locations and will be routed as needed to the Friends’ Sort Site.
    5. Staff are not required to review donated materials. However, upon receipt of donation, should staff note pests or damage in the materials, the materials should be disposed of at the location following Pests in Libraries procedures.
    6. Donated books may not be exchanged nor sold in library locations without prior review by the Friends.
  2. Donors who are interested in donating materials to the collection should contact DVS. DVS will work with Collection Services & Development (CSD) to determine if the item can be added to the collection.
    1. Should a donor directly contact CSD, CSD will notify DVS with the contact information for donors whose gifts are added to the collection.
    2. DVS will steward the donor and keep a record of the gift.
    3. Materials delivered to the library which are not added to the collection will not be returned to the donor.
  3. Donors wishing to make financial contributions are asked to make a gift to the Library Endowment Trust. Donor envelopes are available in each library location, through DVS, or donors can be directed to www.supportmls.org
  4. Any money or checks received as gifts for benefit of the Library, Friends or Trust should be in a sealed envelope, labeled for DVS and routed to the Business Office. The Business Office will securely transfer the gifts to DVS. DVS will acknowledge the gift and provide a receipt for the donor.
  5. For all other questions or concerns about gift processes, please contact DVS.
