Location: Oklahoma History Center

Anne (BI), Darrie (SO), Rich (MC), Phyllis (DN), Mary (DN), Julianna (VI)
- Robbin Davis from the Oklahoma History Center gave us a quick verbal tour of the new facility. She shared that the History Center offers some living history programs at no cost. If you need to contact her, the phone number is 522-0754.
- Jim Garling, musician, has put together some cowboy & western music programs for all ages that we can schedule for the Centennial year events. He presents 30-45 minute shows and also works as a “stroller” at larger events. His phone is 306-4182.
- Dana has several announcements:
- Movie Licensing USA called her to say that we are not currently in compliance with their rules regarding the showing of the movie The Outsiders. She is planning to resolve that issue by paying the 1-year $400.00 fee to them for the license for that DN location. She suggests making that fee part of future budget requests at any location where movies are shown, if movies are an important part of your programming.
- Dana will send us each an emailed packet of forms that each presenter needs to complete. She suggests getting those forms sent out to each paid presenter at the same time that we put events in the printed calendar & schedule the meeting rooms. Call Sylvia in the Business Office if you have any questions regarding the affidavits. Affidavits and other forms can be found on the library’s intranet.
- Dana plans to have a meeting to update the presenter/artist database. Currently we can find the name of the person we’re looking for by asking for “All Artists” or “All Presenters” and then picking off the name from the list.
- The new graphic artist from the MAC office is Dave. He can produce fliers for your programs; don’t forget that he’s there for us. Dana asks that you double-check or correct details on fliers for her.
- Anita will route “Read Y’all” posters to us. They feature James Garner, Dayna Dunbar, and Carrie Underwood.
- Anita reminds us that Women’s History Month is approaching; anyone interested in getting Dwe Williams’s “Ebony Voices” program scheduled should get that planned right away.
- Dayna Dunbar is coming to various locations next week. Don’t miss her—“she’s a riot!”
- Our programming retreat is January 10 at the DN library. If you have ideas for discussion, let Anita know.
- Anita is planning to simplify the Winter Readfest process for 2007. The drawing prizes will be HomeTown Buffet meals (4 per branch). The book bags will be large collapsible bags. She suggests not trying to have a big wrap-up party, but we are certainly free to promote the Winter Readfest kickoff. It will run Feb 1 to March 1.
- Upcoming author visits: Susan Wittig Albert and Hank Fincum are scheduled at various branches. If you have a preference for dates and times, please let her know.
- Phyllis suggests that we share the programs we do ourselves, such as genealogy, technology, crafts. That way, we get a chance to do them multiple times, and they would be no cost for each of us.
- Sharing
- Rich (MC) hosted a sign language instructor for parents of kids needing practice during school breaks. The monarch butterfly program from the OKC zoo was a big hit. For $160.00 the library was able to provide participants with kits and instructions for tracking butterflies. They plan a follow-up party to share the results. Rich himself provides regular technology instruction for beginners on internet use and email.
- Sharon (BE) mentioned a recent AARP driving class, the Alzheimer’s Assoc. group, and a fall planting program. Coming up are a classical guitar recital, eerie tales by David Farris, a Halloween program, and basket weaving.
- Dana (OUT) has received the equipment for Oklahoma Voices; Outreach has already scheduled the programs in the meeting room software. It will up to us to generate interest among promising customers with stories to share.
- Darlene (DN) participated in a series of dance instruction sessions focusing on historical dances. One fun program she adapted from what she learned at PLA has been the Practice English with Friends, which hosts adults seeking to practice English with each other. They’ve had a consistent group of about 9. In December DN will host a choir program
featuring an appearance by the Grinch. OCU piano students are seeking performance opportunities (for free). Ed Perkins will be speaking at DN in January. The Oklahoma Humanities Council has approved a grant for jazz & art performances in February; details of that performance are still being developed. - Darrie (SO) organized a summer gardening speaker from OSU Extension, displays about inventing & inventors in August, their annual Sept Library Fest (with a 5-hour party), a piano recital, book group, and will feature “Made in Oklahoma” baskets as drawing prizes for Customer Service Month.
- Kelly (WA) shared that her branch also hosted an inventor’s program and a piano recital. In the future they are planning to host an estate planning & wills program and a string concert from the OKC Philharmonic.
- Sam (DC) offered a session of Medicare part D sign-ups which was overrun with participants back in May, so they’re doing it again in November. He does one-on-one computer training and has hosts craft programs on tatting, mosaic, and Christmas ornaments. Starbucks is providing a space for his book club to meet.
- Phyllis (DN) is currently working with a new volunteer for genealogy programs. One recent program was on “Proving Indian Ancestry” by Billie Fogerty of the OK Genealogy Society. Phyllis’s daughter Amy has a new book recently added to the library’s collection about the Oklahoma City Zoo.
- Anne (BI) mentioned that our Maintenance colleague Russell has a celtic rock group that recently performed at her branch. Their ESL class now has over 20 people. In November they are looking forward to an author visit and later a piano recital.
- Ronna (ED) will be hosting an open mic poetry night. They have 2 book groups at Edmond. Their customer service month features a large display sign and door prizes. They continue popular ESL and GED classes as well as their movie discussion group.
- Lisa (OUT) mentioned that the Edmond Academy of Ballet and Theater is seeking some performance opportunities in December for their students to practice dancing the Nutcracker at various north-end locations.
- Julianna (VI) shares that the Village will be hosting Dayna Dunbar next week. The scheduled classes for yoga, tai chi, and Spanish are well attended, and the 2 book discussion groups are continuing happily.
- Tip from Dana: put in your artwork requests at the same time you put programs in the calendar software and do your paperwork for presenters.
- Catherine Koss and Jennifer Jones from the Senior Law Resource Center came to introduce themselves and to describe programs they’ll offer for free starting in January 2007. Some of the topics they’ll cover will be preparing for incapacity, long-term care, grandparents’ rights, reverse mortgages, taxes, and Medicare. They wouldn’t be able to give one-on-one legal advice during those sessions, but
they would be going over the statutes and procedures for Oklahoma. Presenters are available evenings and weekends. The phone number is 528-0858. - Robert Mulcahy, retired from the FBI, has written a couple of books and is available for author visits. His titles will be recorded early next year. We received bookmarks and handouts with his information. To schedule an appearance, call 751-3259.
- Kelly and Sam will each take a turn at the Ralph Ellison library coming soon.
