Anita Roesler, Senior Services Coordinator, welcomed all present to the meeting.

A warm welcome to Anita Sanders, she has joined MC as their new librarian.

BJ Williams: Oklahoma Reads Oklahoma
BJ introduced a program where a 6-pack of “Oklahoma” books are to read and one votes for their favorite. The favorite will be picked on November 3rd. You can vote at the website: www.okreadsok.org from now through October 31st. A handout was passed out featuring this info and a synopsis of each book (3 fiction & 3 non-fiction). In the spring of 2004 programs will be held highlighted the winner. For more info. See BJ or the website.

BJ also invited all librarians to perform book reviews or highlight special programs on the MLS T.V show, “Read about It.” If you do want to highlight a program you are going to have, please let BJ know about 2 weeks in advance so she can schedule you into a segment. Kelley, Shellie and Ann all attested to the easiness and fun of being on the show.

Nancy Bucklin: Metro Tech:
Nancy spoke of the success of classes in the library System. The classes will be featured in the Metro Library magazine in November. Nancy handed out a schedule of classes at the following libraries through 2/21/04: BI, SO, DN and ED. If other libraries would like to have classes at their branches,

  • Anita passed out a schedule for the group “Harmonia” in the Our World Series.
  • Ann Meeks passed out a brochure on Toastmasters. She had Lynn Baker at BI recently. The Toastmaster programs are free of charge on there a variety of topics to choose from.

SENIOR ADULT READING PROGRAM (SARP):

  • Anita announced that we have a name for the program, it is: Lifetime Reader’s Society.
  • Anita is rewriting the Friends grant in hopes of new approval.
  • The First Annual Winter Read Fest will be February & March of 2004.
  • Prizes are still up in the air. Anita is trying to get businesses to donate and is working on the obtaining the grant money.
  • Anita hopes that by having this program each library will begin to generate its own mailing list for future programs.

The retreat budget has been greatly reduced for the next year, so we will be having it at: Garden Community Center (3401 NE 16th) on Jan. 14. We will not be able to afford a catered lunch this year. It was discussed of having a pitch-in type lunch. This will be further decided by the Committee that consists of: Trisha, Linda and Anita).

SHARING:

  • Linda (VI): received a multicultural grant from the Friends.
    They are holding oriental brushwork classes. Linda attempted Thai Chi, but the instructor had to cancel. They are holding beginning and advanced Spanish classes. They will be having Heart and Soul in December. They are having classes from the Oklahoma County Extension. They will be having the Healthy Living workshop series. The ESL & GED classes continue.
  • Phyllis (DN): had a computer basics class, she’ll was the teacher. Parking continues to be an issue with programming at DN. It was discussed that perhaps patrons could meet at a hotel and takes the trolley to the library. More programming will come when DN moves to it’s new building.
  • Sharon (BE): They are having a Fall Clean-up Program. Charles Dodson will be at BE on October 2nd. They are also having a Civil War Program: The Legacy of Us on Oct 18th. Heart and Soul will also be performing on Veteran’s Day.
  • Shellie (DC): Sat. will be having a scrapbooking workshop. Charles Dodson in Nov. Continues to do Timberwood Living Center Booktalks.
  • Marsha (CT): The will be holding a “Let’s Talk About It” series, Not for Children Only. They have a display on how children learn and how to help children learn better. They had sign language and Spanish classes over the summer. They will soon be moving to a new building.
  • Ronna (ED): In October, they will be having the Radioheads perform. They will also be having the 2 mystery writers program on October 14th (English mystery writers Peter Lovesey, Liza Cody and Michael Z. Lewin).
    The ESL classes continue.
  • Susie (MC): Programs that MC is hosting:
    • Home Owner’s Education Class (Realtors and banks came free of charge)
    • Water Color Exhibition *Postor Display (WWII Posters)-handout
    • Brad Rictor Oct 28th
    • Mon: Tinker Air Force Base Flying High band
    • Nov: Tellabration 2003 Storytelling
  • Anita (MC): Anita had an adult Henna program recently. On Oct 1, MC will have an Alaskan Fiddle poet.
  • Ann (BI): is having their 40th anniversary bash; all are invited and should have received invitations. They will be having a soap-making workshop next week. There has been a good response to this class. In October, they will be having Brad Rictor and Warda Rasool (computer workshop). In December, their holiday program will feature Donna Cox. Ann received a grant from the Ok. Arts Council to pay for half of this.
  • Kelly (WA): They are having “Heart and Soul” at their library for their holiday celebration. For customer service month they are trying to get donations from area businesses.
  • Darrie (SO): This Monday (Sept. 15th) the SO branch will be having a Library Fest in honor of National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Community Organizations will be present with information. There will also be refreshments and give-aways during the celebration.
  • Kelley (Out): Kelley asked if anyone had used the Artist/Presenter Database yet. Many had used it and all comments were positive. If you would like to have someone added to this, please email all info. To Kelley.
  • Kelley also stated that the Banned Books posters and bookmarks will be routed to the libraries soon.
  • Trisha (WA): The Hefner Mansion bookclub continues with “The Sinister Pig” being read next. The twice a month coffee breaks are continuing.
  • Kalyani (CH): The Spanish classes are also continuing 2x a week. In Nov. will be having a bead jewelry class.

 

PRESENTERS

Sharon West (IRS) & Twyla Gable (Community Action Agency)
IRS wants to help lower income families break the poverty cycle. Thanked the library for offering free tax assistance. Promoting that the library can offer financial literacy. Would like to offer classes to increase financial literacy at the various branches. If you would like to participate, email Bo Birdsong: [email protected].

Project Changing Focus/ Veronica Glover:
Veronica explained that the goal of her workshops were to help people attain their goals and obtain a focus. She handed out a pamphlet on her 10 part series. If you are interested please email her at [email protected] or call 601-1693.
