Summer Reading
There will be a few changes this year with ‘Summer Reading’. This change is being made due to suggestions from staff and observations taken from last summer. A 3rd level will be added and customers will continue to track their reading. If customers reach 30 or more sets of 20 minutes, MLS will donate a book to the Ronald McDonald House. This initiative will be called “Read it forward”.
We are working on having a “Pay it forward” option for those customers that do not want the fine vouchers. There will be a “yes” or “no” option and when a customer indicates they do not need or want a fine waiver, we will give them the option to “Pay it Forward” for another customer who may need it. We will only need to use the “yes” options when a customer chooses to “pay it forward”. In other words, you will not need to use the “no” option if a customer decides to pay it forward.
This year the schools will still receive flyers/postcards like they have in past years. Libraries will receive bookmarks that explain how to sign up for ‘Summer Reading’. Also, supplies will be handled differently than last year. Libraries will receive enough supplies for the first couple of weeks and then each libraries supply person should include summer supplies when ordering for the library. Outreach will have a supply catalog in place for the summer and will be continual year round. This will include all the supplies that Outreach will supply for program needs, as well as summer reading, during the summer.
There are many ways to use Summer Volunteers in your libraries. The two discussed were Celebration Station and Reading Buddy. The most successful Reading Buddy opportunities last year were the ones that were scheduled, entered into SignUp and when readers were immediately paired with Reading Buddy volunteers. These volunteers will first have to be summer reading volunteers, who then also signed up to be a Reading Buddy.
We will have stand ups for picture taking, a cityscape for floor poses to look like they are flying superheroes, and poster “hold ups” with a face cut out to take pictures of themselves. These props will have the MLS hashtag #Ireadfor20 and our MLS logo, etc.
We are emphasizing ways to honor customers for reaching their reading goals with Celebration Station. We want to encourage customers to post these pictures and we’ll possibly use the monitors left over from old computer sign up to display the pictures in the locations.
As part of Celebration Station, we will have book plates for each book give away, instead of placing stickers on every book this year, volunteers and staff members that are giving away prizes will put a book plate in the book at the time they hand the books out. This will give us the opportunity to write the child’s name on the book plate and make it a presentation when giving the book to the customers, celebrating their goal accomplishments.
We want to focus on another strategic plan goal of “connecting customers at every point of contact” by encouraging physical library users to use online services and entice online users to come to our physical locations. We want to merge the two kinds of users to make these users, physical space users and virtual users. We don’t want to develop virtual users, or physical space users, but bridge the two types of users together.
