Print

This week’s database highlight is Oxford Islamic Studies Online. Here you'll find several different full-text versions of the Qur’an as well as scholarly interpretations and commentary. Users can compare versions side by side and dive deeper with images and maps. Cultural articles offer a modern take.

Encompassing over 5,000 A–Z reference entries, chapters from scholarly and introductory works, Qur'anic materials, primary sources, images, maps, and timelines, Oxford Islamic Studies Online offers a multi-layered reference experience designed to provide a first stop for anyone needing information and context on Islam. – from the vendor

Have you ever eaten at a halal restaurant or shopped at a halal grocery store? This week’s open site, Zabihah, directs users to restaurants and stores in their area. Whether you’re looking for a nice dinner or want to try your hand cooking at home, Zabihah can tell you where to go!

Action Steps

  • Explore Oxford Islamic Studies Online – some activities: keyword search “halal”, compare side-by-side texts, browse the image and maps collection, or browse reference. List any interesting findings in the comments.
  • Check out Zabihah. Have you eaten at any of the restaurants in the Metro area? If so, which ones do you recommend?

Metro sticky notes for all commenters!

Yummy Mummy on Penn and Memorial has awesome Egyptian-American food (the whole menu is great; my faves: #1 chicken fatta, #2 beef samboosak). It's sooo goood. And the owners are so kind. They have a second location Downtown on 119 N Robinson ave. http://www.yummymummyok.com/

Travel By Taste Deli & Market in Warr Acres is a tucked away gem with good Persian food. I always get the chicken kabob sandwich (in a lavash wrap - I don't know what they do to the tomatoes, but it's tasty!). They also carry ingredients for sale. http://www.travelbytasteok.com/

I haven't heard of either of those places but I'm definitely going to check them out. Thanks!

My friends are going to LOVE zabihah.com! It's especially exciting to get to tell them about it right on time for Ramadan :)
