How does this compare to previous years? Summer Reading, and Winter Read Fest
This is a great question that I'm sure many are wondering about, so thank you for asking! In previous years, we have emphasized the comparison of participation in a given year to that of previous years; however, due to changes in the way these data have been defined and collected, a direct comparison this year is problematic. This year, it is difficult to distinguish changes that have occurred in actual program engagement from those related to the way in which participant data is now being acquired. Therefore, while it appears that youth participation has decreased overall, it is important to temper this fact with an understanding of the various factors that play a role in the way these measures are arrived at. For this reason, this year we have chosen to focus on establishing a new baseline for future years and on identifying future opportunities through comparisons made between participant groups for the current year.
By the end of the program, about 5.89% of Summer Reading participants cited having chosen to participate in order to, "Become a reading role model for my children," and 1.75% to, "Track My Reading." These responses correspond to the pink and light green slices of "Reasons for Participation," respectively.
