Adult Services Minutes for November 2005

Anita Roesler, Senior Services Coordinator, welcomed all present to the meeting.

A big thank you to Ann Meeks and the Belle Isle Library for the delicious snacks and the wonderful hospitality!

Kim Terry, Marketing and Communication Manager
Kim discussed large scale events at library branches.

Ruby Soutiere, Materials Selector
Ruby discussed a new book, Read It and Eat, by Sarah Gardner. Read It and Eat is organized by month, each highlighting a different theme. The book selections range from classic to contemporary, and encompass fiction and nonfiction. The book includes:

  • an introduction to the month’s theme and reading selections
  • discussion points to lead your group
  • recipes inspired by the reading and theme

Anita Roesler
The Adult Programmers Retreat is January 11th , 2006 from 8:30am-4:30pm at the Downtown library. Anita discussed the ideas for safety training:

  • Crisis Intervention
  • HALT
  • Traveling to Abeline

Discussion followed, Phyllis suggested a hypnosis class for relaxation or self help. Anita will get more information.

The retreat will include training for the Winter ReadFest.

E-mail Anita if you have suggestions for the retreat.

Anita handed out the Adult Services Meeting schedule for 2006. There will be three meetings per year instead of six.

Sharing

Anita- Jo Ellen Wheeler teaches knitting 2-3 week series. She charges $50.00 per series and her contact number is 525-0979.

Kelley- Customer appreciation at Warr Acres had a tropical theme. Kelly shared pictures, bookmarks, etc. The library had over 150 drawings (including books, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Sonic, Johnnie’s, gift certificates, cash donated from area business and comic books from New World comics.

  • The AARP Defensive class was well attended.
  • The author program
  • Banned Books into Movies popular program
  • Attack of the Killer B movies
  • Advanced Directives had a low attendance

Ann- Renee Guterage (Christian Author), very good program. Gave tips on how to get started writing, etc.

  • Radio show program, great attendance.
  • Red Cross Program, low attendance but the program and presenter are very good.
  • December 3, a holiday program “ In the Swing of Christmas”
  • Nega Gato over 250 people attended.

 

Phyllis-Genealogy program in October

  • Thursday at the theater program
  • Family history day
  • Debra documenting oral history.
  • Creating a family newsletter

Darrie- GED classes continue, 15 people have passed the GED test since January 2005.

  • The Southern Oaks Book Club continues to grow each month.
  • Southern Oaks provided coffee and doughnuts for customer appreciation, had daily drawings for book bags and had a drawing for two beautiful “Made In Oklahoma” gift baskets.
  • The Research Revolution: Science and the Shaping of Modern Life- Professor David Dyer provided an excellent program.

Anita Sanders- Future Events

  • December 11th, Phil Mitchel Jazz concert. Santa will make an appearance.
  • December 12th, Holiday Craft Program weaving baskets
  • January- Wayne McEvilly, piano playing all afternoon
  • February- A four hour self defense class for women. The instructor is a police officer.

Elizabeth- Nega Gato over 200 people attended.

December craft program make your own holiday gifts.

Jullianne- Diane Rice provides hands on Computer instruction
