The Naming of Library Buildings & Spaces Policy establishes the responsibility for naming library spaces. All library buildings in the Metropolitan Library System are public spaces and property of the cities within Oklahoma County and Oklahoma City, served by the Metropolitan Library System.

Regulations

  1. Naming a Building
    1. Sole responsibility for the naming or renaming of buildings rests with the Metropolitan Library System, the Metropolitan Library Commission and the owning municipality.
    2. Buildings will be named with a preference for geographic or functional designations.  Exceptions may be considered when the owning city determines there is a strong community need for a specific name of a building.
  2. Naming Opportunities Within a Building
    1. The Metropolitan Library System and the Metropolitan Library Commission have the sole right to name or rename library meeting rooms or special use areas at any time
    2. Naming opportunities within a building will be primarily considered during building construction or renovation and may be considered at other times for individuals or organizations that provide a substantial financial contribution relative to a need established by the Metropolitan Library System. Naming proposals will be established in conjunction with the city officials and staff of the Metropolitan Library System.
    3. Naming proposals will be brought before the Library Commission for final approval.
    4. The Director of Development, Marketing Manager and Senior Management Group will be responsible for determining, maintaining and stewarding the manner in which the building or room name is recognized (e.g. signage).
