Database Highlight #31: We've got the Genealogy for That

This week’s database highlight, African American Heritage, provides unique sources and support for African American genealogy. The database ties together historical records from the census and military, as well as, the slave register and Freedman’s Bank. In addition to records, researchers are connected to the AfriGeneas Community - a website offering advice, forums, and other ways to exchange information.

“This collection was created in partnership with leading African American genealogists and recognized leaders in genealogical information to develop a comprehensive mix of resources, records, and tools specifically pertaining to African Americans.

As a consequence of slavery and the changing legal status of African Americans, research in this area can be more challenging than other genealogical inquiries.

Jumping from research and genealogy, to culture and current events, our newest streaming video service, Kanopy, has curated a Black History Month collection. These movies and documentaries offer customers ‘thoughtful entertainment’ from black writers, actors, directors, educators, and filmmakers.
