Make Room for Kanopy Kids!

Print

Metro’s streaming video service, Kanopy, has launched an entirely new collection just for kids!

Kanopy Kids highlights films and TV series that help children develop empathy, mindfulness, and self-esteem through entertaining and educational videos.

Thoughtful Content

  • PBS Kids favorites: Between the Lions, Nature Cat and Dinosaur Train
  • Beloved characters: Babar, Franklin, Little Bear, Curious George and Caillou
  • Oscar® nominated family films
  • Literary classic adaptations: Where The Wild Things Are, Johnny Appleseed and Little Red Hen
  • Award-winning animated shorts
  • Diverse videos from around the globe

Parental Controls

In addition to age-based ratings on the children’s videos, the main catalog is inaccessible in Kanopy Kids mode and a pin can be set so parents can ensure children only have access to the children’s videos. This is very similar to how it works with Metro’s other streaming video service, hoopla kids mode.

How it works

  1. Sign into Kanopy  - kids cards are allowed now so a parent can easily set up an account for a child using their card and enable Kanopy Kids right from the start!
  2. Click Kids - located at the top right next to the account holder's name.
  3. Handoff to a child.
  4. If sharing an account, the parent can exit Kanopy Kids by entering a pin.

Action Steps

  • Check out Kanopy Kids. What are your first impressions?
  • All of Kanopy comes with public performance rights so you can screen a Kanopy Kids movie in the library without worrying about copyright permissions. Are there any Kanopy Kids movies you’d like to see?

Printable poster attached and stickers coming to each library.

Nice titles, poor content filter

FYI, the Parental Control PIN (aka filter) isn't very effective. In Firefox, I set PIN in My Dashboard & while it did prevent me from watching an R-rated movie (Internet Explorer 11 did not prevent me from watching the same movie with the filter enabled), I was able to go back to My Dashboard, see the PIN displayed in large numbers, and easily disable the filter.

In the Android app, I didn't find where I could enable the filter so for those kids using our Kanopy collection, just like when they're in a physical library, they should probably be accompanied by an adult.

PINs and parental controls

In Chrome, all the movies outside of Kanopy Kids that I tried to watch were blocked. But my understanding was that the pin (if enabled) would be required to exit Kanopy Kids and I was able to get out to regular Kanopy without entering the pin.
