Database Highlight #2: We've Got the Ice Cream for That

Print

July is National Ice Cream month! This week’s database highlight goes to Culture Grams.

Culture Grams is your one-stop shop containing state and country profiles, graphs and tables, photos, biographical articles, and unique information like recipes from around the world. There is a version of this database just for kids and a version for everyone else.

Is America the only place that enjoys ice cream during the summer? Whether you’re planning a trip, researching countries for a report, or looking into your heritage, Culture Grams is an excellent place to learn about international and national culture.

This week’s free site isn’t necessarily informative but it could serve you well the next time you go to pick up your favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor and can’t find it. Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Graveyard lays flavors to rest and gives you a chance to bring them back from the dead.

Action Steps

  1. Browse Culture Grams
  2. List a country besides America that enjoys ice cream and tell me your favorite ice cream flavor (hint: use keyword “ice cream”; pro tip - the quotations are important for searching specific phrases)

Culture Grams

-Argentina - Ice cream is a year-round favorite, and gelato shops that offer many flavors are especially common thanks to Italian influence in Argentina.

-My favorite is Banana Split made by Blue Bell.

Jamaica

One of my favorite countries I've ever visited (not that I've visited every one or anything).
I couldn't possibly answer a favorite--it's ice cream! I will give a plug for Culture Grams. That is a good source.

Did you eat ice cream while you were there?

Cuba

For Cuba, under Eating: "People enjoy snacks sold by street vendors. These include light sandwiches, small pizzas, sodas, ice cream, and churros." My favorite flavor is chocolate chip cookie dough :)

churros

Imagine if they had churros stuffed with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream! Earbuds are headed to you.

Colombia

Under "Dating and Marriage" for the Republic of Colombia "common dates include spending time at parks, going to the movies, and going out for ice cream or a meal." Oh, and my favorite ice cream is chocolate chunk.

flavor to bring back

Not that I'm ever been a big Ben & Jerry's ice cream eater - but if I was to bring back a flavor the Aloha Macadamia - Rich milk chocolate cashew Brazil-nut butter ice cream with macadamia nuts covered in white & dark fudge & milk chocolatey swirl. now, that sounds yummy!! but let's make it dark chocolate instead.

Germany - sadly no ice cream

Having spent 3 years leaving outside Frankfurt, Germany I don't remember the Germans eating ice cream much and there is no mention of it in Culture Grams.
It does say "Germans prefer their drinks without ice" and that I do remember. You had to ask for cold wasser, asking for ice for your drink would get you a sherbet.
My new favorite is the Sea Salt Caramel Cashew by Braums.

sherbert instead of ice

So if you ask for ice in your drink they bring you sherbet? That's a great deal!

sherbert instead of ice

Yes, the first time I did it, that's what I got! and being from Southern parents I like lots of ice in my drinks.

Ice Cream

It has to be ITALY: their gelato is the best and my favorite is pistachio with tiramasu a close 2nd. The Gelato place at Penn Square has very good gelato...Pellucio's.
"Hosts might offer their guests coffee, cake, ice cream, or drinks."

Gelato

I've only ever had gelato a couple times but I recall it being good! I'll have to check Pellucio's out. Earbuds coming your way.
