Audio-enabled books are coming to MLS libraries!

On April 29, audio-enabled books will be available for checkout at MLS libraries. You might have heard these items referred to as “Vox books”; Vox is the name of the product produced by Library Ideas. While all the items currently purchased are Vox, there is no guarantee that future items will also be.
Audio-enabled books are great for beginning readers or for parents to share with children! The recordings capture children’s imagination while helping develop reading and literacy skills.
Each book is hardbound with a built-in audio player, with options for external speaker or earphones. Audio includes a dramatic reading of the book with page turn signals. Each book is powered by a rechargeable battery good for around 100 plays. Libraries will not check out chargers with the books; each library will have a charger so that staff can recharge batteries when needed.
For now, all audio-enabled books are in the EASY area. The call number includes the designation READ ALONG. The books fit standard shelves, but the open edge (away from the spine) is slightly thicker than the spine due to the audio player.
Audio-enabled books are inventoried using location code EASY and media code AEB.

What I love the most about these audio-enabled books is that our young customers don't need a CD player to use them. I think they'll get a lot of in-library use, as well as being checked out often.
