Access Workshop Series Revamp

Print

In July, a workgroup consisting of Nicole Sump-Crethar (NW-LM), Daniel Chesney (WA-EM), Jared Johnson (BE-AM2), Carmen Stoneking (CL-AM2), Kevin Sendall (MC-AM1), Milissa Copeland (L&D), and Tricia Andrews (PSA) have been working to revamp the access workshop series.

We sought feedback from Library Management Team in August and began working on crafting the new access workshops.

We have some updates we’d like to share with all staff:

  • Goal is to launch with the new LMS, MetroU, in February 2023
  • Will be renaming the Access Workshops to CARL
    • Working on updating the Access Manual to the CARL Manual so wording is consistent and Guest Experiences friendly.
  • Will have 14 micro-courses lasting no more than 30 minutes.
    • One workshop will be instructor led, with all other workshops being done as staff have time.
  • Will be focusing on scenarios and checklists.
    • Checklists will be done by supervisors for content regarding judgement calls on things that could negatively impact a guest’s account while routine procedures may be done by a peer.
  • Learning Paths will be required for new staff based on their position’s primary tasks. These courses cover content related to their specific job, allowing room for learning in CARL!
    • Workroom: Item Maintenance, Circulation
    • Circulation Desk: Establish Eligibility, Create New Accounts, Circulation, Troubleshooting Accounts, POS, Item Maintenance
    • Reference Desk: Item Searching, Circulation, Holds, Establish Eligibility, Create New Accounts, Troubleshooting Accounts
  • Slight modifications will be made to Access Basics to remove duplicated content in the series that is more appropriate to learn after learning job details. Will also be renaming CARL Basics with the February launch.

The 14 courses include:

  • Establishing Eligibility
  • Creating Accounts
  • Patron Searching
  • Troubleshooting Accounts (will have instructor led portion)
  • Circulation
  • Holds
  • Fill and Wander List
  • Item Searching
  • Item Maintenance
  • Point of Sale
  • Reports
  • Inventory
  • Serials
  • Outreach and CARL.Connect

You’ll find course descriptions, objectives, and an outline in document below. This document is still in DRAFT mode and things may change based on content creation and feedback.

More information will come as it finalizes. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or a supervisor for questions.
