Database Highlight #26: We've got the Premier Database for That

Print

We're at week 3 of New Year's resolutions. A common resolution is becoming dedicated to a pursuit – whether it’s professional, personal, or intellectual. This is the time when people think about going back to school, reinvesting in their careers, or learning something new. The Ebsco Premier databases are the best place to get started! Covering three broad areas, these databases hold thousands of journals, magazines, and newspapers perfect for research, current events, and learning more about a topic.

Academic Search Premier – got a customer returning to school or working on their first degree? This is the place to start.

A popular resource found in many scholarly settings worldwide, Academic Search Premier is a leading multidisciplinary research database. It provides acclaimed full-text journals, magazines and other valuable resources. – from the vendor

Business Source Premier  -  Come here if you're looking to start a new business or keep up with business publications like Harvard Business Review and Bloomberg.

The industry's most widely used business research database, Business Source Premier features full text and searchable cited references for top journals covering a variety of business disciplines. – from the vendor

MasterFILE Premier  - are you wanting to look up articles in popular sources like USA Today or sick of waiting for a copy of Library Journal to land on your desk? Wait no more!

Designed specifically for public libraries, this database provides full-text magazines, reference books and primary source documents. It also includes an extensive image collection containing photos, maps and flags. – from the vendor

PRO TIP

If you’re looking for a specific issue of a magazine, journal, or newspaper, try using the Publications search instead of the main search box. The Publications tab is located in the top navbar. This is also where you go if you’d like to subscribe to publication email notifications with links to articles.  Just be sure you are in the second search box. The top search box is still the regular search.

This week’s open site is CSPAN’s video library. CSPAN’s congressional coverage might not be the most exciting viewing but it is comprehensive. Check out their archive where you can search by videos, clips, people and more. Great for current and/or historical government reports.

Action Steps

  • Pick a Premier product and run a search relating to one of your resolutions. No need to share the resolution but do give it a try!
  • Run a Publications search for a publication you’re interested in. Did you find it? If so, in which Premier database and what’s the coverage?

All respondents get Ebsco sticky pads.

Bonus Question for a Google tote: What’s the title of this article – Newsweek, 3/31/2017, Vol. 168, Issue 12, p12-15? Tote goes to the first person to get it right!

WaterWorld

I searched for "water rights" and wound up reading an article on alternative water supplies from the December 1, 2017 issue of WaterWorld. It was a very short article, mostly a short overview of what alternative water supplies are and why it's something that engineers and other professionals need to be thinking of.

I also found "Water International" - a journal that covers topics related to water management from around the world.
