Metro Pop-Up Spots

Print
Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
We will bring temporary pop-up libraries to locations throughout the community in order to reach underserved populations and attract new members.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
Staff will visit a variety of locations to set up Metro Pop-Up Spots: temporary libraries. The Metro Pop-Up Spot would include materials available to check out, iPads to allow customers to access digital materials and resources, a mobile hotspot to provide wifi for visitors, and staff available to sign up new members and check out materials using CarlConnect, provide reference and tech assistance, and lead storytimes and other programs. Locations for Pop-Up Spot visits include, but are not limited to: housing developments, community centers, after-school programs, food truck events, farmer’s markets. We have begun this project in the Community Libraries’ service areas, focusing primarily on Spencer (near Nicoma Park) and the neighborhoods and schools surrounding Wright. If the project proves to be successful, we plan to expand our reach throughout the Central Region, beginning in the Paseo district. Materials needed for this project include tents for Pop-Ups at outdoor events and a van to transport materials, as well as technology and furniture, marketing materials, contractual purchases (insurance for the van, wifi data plan for the hotspot), and other consumables. The expected outcome of the Metro Pop-Up Spots project is to increase market penetration in the Community Libraries’ service areas (and throughout Oklahoma County, upon future expansion of the project). Our goal is to increase new library card sign-ups for the Community Libraries by 20% in the first year of this program.
Why should we select this project?:
If we want to reach our 20-year goal for every member of the community to use a library service, then we need to meet those potential members where they are. Families with limited access to transportation struggle to get to the library, despite interest in our materials and services. We’ve already begun this project at the Community Libraries by taking InterReach to Fred Factory Gardens public housing in Spencer. The families we spoke to there were thrilled to see a library presence in the community, because they are unable to reach our permanent locations. We at the Community Libraries want to lead the system in InterReach because we feel it is the natural progression for our libraries. We were the Bookmobiles, and our purpose has always been to bring materials and services to the far reaches of Oklahoma County – to identify gaps in our service, and to make the library more accessible to all members of the community. We want to continue this tradition by expanding our services even further, and by developing new, exciting methods for reaching into our communities.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Due to the current small number of traveling staff at the Community Libraries, we would requisition two HT Associate Librarians whose primary responsibilities would be staffing the Metro Pop-Up Spots. We would like to staff the Pop-Up Spots with at least two staff members per visit, so until we can gain additional staff for this purpose, we will be limited in the number of visits we are able to make due to our scheduling needs. Upon expansion throughout the Central Region, we would depend on staff participation at DN and RE.

Great idea, Kiley! I think
Great idea, Kiley! I think this would really help market penetration and it be a great pilot project because it could start out small but then have lots of possibilities to grow and expand.

I miss bookmobiles. When I
I miss bookmobiles. When I was a child in the early 80s I lived in an area that wasn't very close to the library and I remember getting so excited on Bookmobile Day. I'd watch for it like the ice cream truck.

Love this!
I miss bookmobiles and the access they create. My idea was going to be to offer book mobiles and popup "shops" around the metro at events. I'd love to see this piloted! I didn't realize you'd already started interreach in Spencer-- that's so exciting! I would suggest that Forest Park, areas near former Witcher (122nd & 135 junction) or near the Oakdale School District be considered when looking for pop-up options. I think all the potential options you mentioned are great (let's get one of these at Bleu Garten on a movie night! all the Friday neighborhood events!) There's the potential to partner with the multiple two and four year colleges and universities around the metro as well. Great idea!

Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestions, Kate! As we grow this project, we'll need everyone's help identifying the gaps throughout the county. I think that Oakdale, at least, would be within the CL's service area right now, as it's near Jones. As for food truck/neighborhood events -- we're reaching out to the Farmer's Market and Delmar Gardens food truck park, and I'll keep you posted on our progress there!

This is also an idea we're
This is also an idea we're kicking around at NW. Embedded librarians at food truck events was one idea. Another idea is to develop mobile library units that can canvass neighborhoods, much like campaigns canvass during election years. Utilizing the data we've collected with OrangeBoy should help us determine which areas of Oklahoma County have the lowest market penetration and would be good candidates for these efforts.

I'm so excited to see that
I'm so excited to see that people across the system have had these same ideas, and I hope the pilots process opens up a dialogue among us all where we can share these ideas (like you are now!) and coordinate our efforts. We've been working with Jon Rollman to use the OrangeBoy data, like you suggested. We had a few hiccups applying it to the CL service areas (some complication with zip codes for WR and NP), so for our immediate purposes we're relying on new card sign-up stats instead. But like you said, I think we would be able to use that data to find the gaps throughout the county.

Do you think that staffing
Do you think that staffing certain locations with a security guard would be a good investment?
kiley.ingram
Emily, thanks for the
Emily, thanks for the suggestion. We don't want to bring a guard to the pop-ups because we think that would affect our approachability. We don't want to send the message to the communities we're visiting that we feel unsafe -- to quote SOaP, "we can only be trusted when we trust our members." To ensure security we will always staff the pop-ups with at least two staff members, so no one ever has to work alone.

Can I do this?
I just want to ride a bookmobile bicycle.... But really, this could be a great opportunity to bring our services to our community, and I imagine that, based on measuring the success of such a project, we'd have a good idea of where we can expect to expand in the future.
