Press Release: Metropolitan Library System Announces No Late Fines on Children's Materials

OKLAHOMA CITY– Beginning July 1, children’s materials including books, movies and music checked out from the Metropolitan Library System will no longer accrue fines if late.

“Fines are barriers to library access,” said Julie Ballou, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Library System. “We are committed to reducing barriers and supporting equitable access to literacy in our community.”

As of July 1, any existing fines on children’s materials will also be waived.

Manual Fines Proposal

In the spring of 2020, Collection Development and Access Services reviewed the use of the reduced pricing for the $7 disc replacement and reduced costs for damaged Playaways. The $7 disc replacement is rarely used, and at times, used incorrectly. The reduced pricing of Playaways is overwhelmingly not applied and customers are charged the full amount of the item. Further details are in the attached proposal.
