I'm currently working on or interested in getting my MLIS, how will the alignment affect me?
An MLIS will give you more options in the realigned MLS. Those who have the MLIS have the option to either follow the Access or Engagement path. Access is great for the MLIS-degreed librarian who is interested in management, who enjoys customer service, highly tactical work, and the more traditional day-to-day operations including circulation and weeding. A staff member with an MLIS who is not interested in management has opportunities to specialize locally or centrally - building relationships with the community, developing and presenting programs, and doing traditional reader's advisory work. A staff member with an MLIS who wants to supervise can do that by serving as a Youth Supervisor, Adult Supervisor, or an Engagement Supervisor.
