Describe Project and Impact:
Natural language interface to Metro website, catalog, databases
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
A natural language interface that can be embedded in a webpage, mobile app, or stand alone information kiosk. Members can enter questions in natural language and receive assistance displayed as text or as speech. The interface operates 24/7 and can answer library FAQs, direct members to appropriate parts of library website, catalog or databases.
Why should we select this project?:
Scalable, proven concept, wide variety of applications. Test engine can be programmed at low cost; avatar, text to speech can be added as desired depending on use.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Costs vary with type and scale of implementation. DL and IT Departments must be involved, but may have limited time.
Source of Inspiration:
Concept has been proven at a number of libraries - University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Mentor Public Library, Akron Summit County Public Library. These were created using a limited mark up language; far more powerful programming languages now exist.
