Cell Phone charging stations

Print
Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Public Cell phone charging stations which might attract additional customers
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
I have seen several customers sitting at our Public Computers, but not logged on ! They ARE charging their cell phones and perhaps downloading eBooks (we can at least hope) Much like you see in airports, there are stations with multiple stations with USS ports so phones can be recharged. This would also free up PC's that actually could be used and not just charging spots in the library.
Why should we select this project?:
Customers appreciate the various places that you can recharge their cell phones. Hotels are adapting their rooms to accommodate charging multiple electronic devices as their studies show customers carry multiple devices. Some of the best customer service is ANTICIPATING a customer's need, before they ask. I think providing public cell phone charging stations a way to anticipate a customer's need to recharge their phone.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
The additional of additional charging stations will require additional wiring, or adaptations to existing wiring to power the charging stations. Some of the library may have space limitations as well.

I am making the assumption
I am making the assumption (apologies if it is incorrect!) that you are talking about additional charging ports near tables/chairs/etc. If you are, I also suggest looking at charging kiosks for cell phones. These offer locking doors and individual spots for cell phones, which offer additional security for charging devices.

Charging stations
We have portable charging stations here at Downtown and they get a lot of use. We do sometimes have the issue of members leaving their phones unattended at the stations but it helps that these stations are placed next to tables with chairs which allows for our members to be able to sit down and still use their phones. So, it is probably important to factor in extra seating or rearranged seating to go along with the charging stations depending on what type you get.

Preference
I think that replacing the current extension cords that only have grounded A.C. with extension cords that fit in the middle of the tables, but also offer U.S.B. would be best. Having the big tower next to the table means that only 2 out of 4 seats are eligible for charging and are probably much more expensive than extension cords with U.S.B. slots. The towers are probably best for the libs. with porches/outdoor areas like NW and CT, if they had rain shields.
