Mental Health: Destigmatizing

Course Date: On Demand

Course Duration: 5 min

Description: Mental Health: Destigmatizing is a course that helps you recognize and change the way you think about people suffering from a mental health issue. It's astounding to discover that 80% of Americans will deal with some type of uncontrollable mental illness during their lifetime. This statistic is worsened when we consider that those people are still treated with disdain by many of us. Mental health patients are frequently treated quite differently from people with other issues such as cancer or a physical disability. That's why this course is so important. This program discusses ways in which we can destigmatize mental illness. We talk about educating others by removing offensive language and descriptors, and talking openly about mental conditions rather than hiding them. Most importantly, we discuss how we can combat exclusion by showing compassion and respect to sufferers. Education is the key to discovery. This course helps by presenting ways we can all be instruments of progressive change.

Mental Health First Aider

Course Date: On Demand

Course Duration: 15 min

Description: Everyone knows the story of Vincent Van Gogh, right? About the ear? Or was it just part of it? The details aren't clear. What's likely is that Vincent struggled with his mental health. In his time, doctors just weren't equipped to deal with mental-health problems, so he didn't receive the support he needed. Thankfully, we live in a time when mental-health symptoms are being recognized and support is being provided. Unfortunately, many of these symptoms can often be heightened while at work. A mental-health first aider acts as an advocate for mental health in the workplace, and operates as a point of contact for those who are suffering. This course is for everyone because, sadly, mental-health issues are common in every workplace. You'll see what a mental-health first aider is, what the signs and symptoms are for a range of mental-health conditions, and how a mental-health first aider can provide assistance and guidance for their colleagues. Please note that this is a short course, and only touches on some of the more common mental-health problems. It will not qualify individuals to diagnose or treat mental ill health; and learners may not be called mental-health first aiders based on completion of this course alone. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is the largest membership organization for safety and health professionals. They act as a champion, adviser, advocate and trainer for health and safety in organizations of all shapes and sizes, in over 130 countries. Their focus is to support the creation of workplaces that are safer, healthier, and more sustainable. This course has met their stringent criteria and has been approved as part of their bitesize learning approval program.
