Downtown Library Hosts "Young at Art: Caldecott Illustrations" This Winter

Print

Young at Art: Downtown Library will host Young at Art: A Selection of Caldecott Book Illustrations this winter. This exhibit, provided by Exhibits USA, features original art from Caldecott Winners and Honor Books illustrators from the 1920s-2010s, as well as original editions of their books. The exhibit will be on display from December 18th to January 17th in the Downtown Atrium.

In addition to the display, Downtown Children’s Programmers have created phenomeneal programming every Tuesday through Saturday during the exhibition. A Caldecott storytime will start at 2pm in thr Atrium, followed by “the Inspiration Lab” from 2:30-3:30pm in the Downtown Castle Room. In here, children can explore passive programming that draws from and expands on themes, characters, or elements from the art exhibit.

Other programming elements will be a story walk through the display, guiding kids and adults through the exhibit, and a chapbook with reflection questions, writing and drawing prompts, and information about the Caldecott artists featured.

All branches will receive promotional posters  and cardstock flyers to give to our guests promoting the exhibit. We ask that these be made available at your service points, but also given away at storytimes and other related children’s programming. A local dentist has generously provided funding for parking, so please assure your guests who are not familiar with Downtown Library that there will be affordable parking options.

The exhibit will be prominently featued on our website and metrolibrary.org/youngatart will be up and running soon.

Would you like to be involved? Please consider hosting a Storytime that features a Caldecott winner and runners-up/honor books in November, December, or January. If you send me a library market entry, I can add it to online promotion. All branches have ample Caldecott books on their shelves to create a promotional display—it would be awesome to have one around the promotional materials. Lastly, if you are interested in leading one of the in-exhibit storytimes, please gain supervisor approval and contact Daniel Chesney at DN.

Because of the timing of this exhibit we will not be reaching out to or coordinating with school groups, but when the semester begins again, they are welcome to come and explore the exhibit and its related programming on their own.

Let me know if you have questions or ideas about the exhibit. Please let your library guests know about this, as well as your friends and family.
