eBooks & audiobooks just for kids!

To encourage our youngest readers to use our digital titles, we have partnered with OverDrive to create an online children's reading room! This site is separate from our larger digital collection and contains a number of children's fiction and nonfiction eBooks and audiobooks across a range of reading levels. As a bonus, nearly all of the eBooks are in the OverDrive READ format so the reader (or their parent) won't be burdened with the process of software installation and creating an Adobe ID. Customers can access this site by visiting our eMedia page and scrolling down just a bit until they see the "for KIDS eReading Room" image.

We've created a handout that you can give to customers. Explore this site, let us know what you think, and be sure to tell your customers about it!

Love it!

This is such a great tool! I especially like the filter functions for devices and reading level. I have a lot of child customers so I can't wait to tell them and their parents!

Love it too!

Actually you have been able to do this for some time through the advanced search option and in the side bar but the new page dedicated to kids is great!

So Excited about This! Handouts Available?

As a parent and a librarian, I'm really happy that this is available! The filters are great and the usability of the site is terrific -- really simple and clear. Are there any handouts/posters/fliers about the eReading Room that we can give to students or schools?

Handouts/posters/fliers

Jessica: We didn't know this was going live until after it had gone live so to my knowledge, there are currently no handouts available but I don't imagine that will be the case for long.

Thanks, Tim! Handouts would

Thanks, Tim! Handouts would be wonderful for school visits as we demonstrate how teachers and students can use their classroom iPads and eReaders to read library books.

Wonderful

This is so wonderful! As an educator, we are always looking for anything that helps students. Reading is a critical component of education.

I Broke It?

I did notice that when I applied the filters "Grade Level= Pre-Kindergarten" and "Format Class= eBook" it doesn't narrow it down to just that selection. All the eBook results appear instead. However, it does narrow down when I select "Grade Level= Pre-Kindergarten" and "Format Class= Audiobook". Am I doing something wrong or did I break it?

Problem?

I was unable to recreate your problem. I went to Levels--Reading Levels and when I applied the same PreK & eBook filters, the collection narrowed from over 1000 titles to under 100 titles. Maybe you can try it again, alongside with some other filtered searches, to see if you can recreate the problem?

Thanks Again, Tim

I'll email you a couple of screenshots of the results from the filtered search on my screen. I still love the site. My son and I played with it quite a bit during the weekend. He loves eBooks.

Filtering

How wonderful to have a dedicated kids site! I noticed while doing some filtering though that the grade level filter could be confusing. If you just choose grade level, you will get any results that include that grade level in its range of grade levels. So since Encyclopedia Brown is for grades 3-6, if you limit to 6th grade it will show up. However, if you add the ATOS level (aka AR level) of 6.0-6.9, it will limit to just that level. This could be helpful for readers who read above or below their grade as well. You could choose the reader's grade level and then filter to their reading level to find books that would interest the reader at their reading level.

Also, the Interest Level filters are not helpful for the Middle Grades+ and up as they show completely unrelated material (For example, Happy Birthday Mallory is suggested for high schoolers.)

This is great!

My daughter loves reading on my Kindle. Glad to have a way to let her navigate instead of doing it for her! I'll be sharing this with my customers.

OverDrive READ

Make sure to pitch the eBooks in the OverDrive READ format so there's no messing with software or an Adobe ID.

Update about filtered search problem

I have relayed the filtered search issue that Jessica mentioned to our OverDrive account specialist & they have passed it on to their developers so hopefully we can resolve this problem asap.
