Video Games in Libraries?

This recent opinion column on CNN.com about video games in libraries misses the mark. The author's premise is that libraries are using video games to lure teenagers into the buildings to stay relevant in the digital age. While bringing new customers in might be a side effect, our video game programming certainly has grander purposes.

Our role in connecting customers to a digitized society

A recent Pew study found that 70% of American adults had a high speed Internet connection at home. Another 10% did not have a high speed connection at home but did have a smartphone. If we apply these findings to the entire US population, this means that 20% of American adults (some 47 million people) have "neither a home broadband connection nor a smartphone." With all public libraries offering free public Internet access and the overwhelming majority providing broadband access, libraries are uniquely positioned to connect everyone to the Internet.

MLS Hidden Treasures

When I came across this article: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/revealed-book-size-ladybug-135122227.html to an article about the University of Iowa’s collection of miniature books, I agreed the tiny books were adorable, but did you know we have our own miniature book collection in the Oklahoma Room of the Downtown Library? These little books were probably donated to the France Room when it opened with the “new” Downtown Library in 1954. Although unrelated to Oklahoma history, these little jewels are among many odd items to be found tucked away in an acid-free archive box in the Oklahoma Room.

Rabid customers

And by rabid, I mean passionate about the library. How do we go about building a community of customer evangelists? Do we simply be nice to them when they're in the library? I mean, you can have a nice interaction every time you go to Whataburger but have you ever heard of a Whataburger evangelist?

Chicago's awesome mass transit system made it easy to get from hotel to conference center. Still, it was a bit of a challenge maneuvering around 2 million Blackhawks fans celebrating their Stanley Cup win! You couldn't go 10 feet without running into a red-shirted hockey fan who either wanted to give you a high five, hug you, or punch you in the face (depending on their level of alcohol consumption).
