Lending non-traditional items

Referencing an earlier article I wrote about libraries lending non-traditional items, Google recently rolled out Google Helpouts which puts people in need of help in touch with "experts" via live video. Some of the Helpouts are free while others have a cost. To me, this program is right in a library's wheelhouse, i.e. meeting their community's information needs. Wouldn't it be a great move to positions ourselves at the center of the "community experience" if we could do something similar?

Non-Traditional Items

Tim,

I LOVE this idea. I really think it would help us respond in a current way to our community's information needs (would be *great* to feature some of our computer specialists, for instance). Might also help folks re-imagine the ways in which they can use their library for everyday info needs in our instant/digital society.

Thanks for sharing! (Maybe someday, with the help of Google, I, too, will learn to apply eyeliner properly.)
