Kanopy - Showing Now at a (home) Theater Near You
International cinema! Classic films! LGBTQ movies! Educational shorts! Award winning documentaries! Indies!
Metro’s newest streaming service, Kanopy, offers “thoughtful entertainment” including selections from Criterion, PBS, and The Great Courses. With a pay-per-view model, this is a good resource to introduce to teachers. All films come with public performance rights, so screening a film at the library or in a classroom is a breeze.
The collection of over 30,000 films can be streamed from the web, iOS, Andrioid, AppleTV or Roku.
What you need to know:
- Kanopy is a pay-per-view service so members are limited to 6 films a month. The film allotment resets at the 1st of the month.
- Kanopy has lots of educational films that teachers are welcome to use in their classroom. If you hear a need for a film needing unlimited access for a limited time – we can make it work!
- Kanopy is primarily for adults. There are some younger education films but for the most part the collection will appeal to teenagers and older.
- Kanopy isn’t just for movies! Members can enjoy tv series like The Kingdom, the original Australian series of Wilfred, Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and Ken Burn’s The Central Park Five.
- All content is fully accessible and ADA compliant.
- Films rent for 72 hours with unlimited viewing during that time.
Members will need to create an account with Kanopy (Facebook or Google can be used) and a library card in good standing. Library card authentication is a one-time step. Once they have an account, should they ever logout, they only need to log back in with the account username/password. If a card is blocked due to any reason, the member will not be able to access Kanopy until the situation is resolved.

It took a long time for my verification by e-mail when registering. Less than 10, but over 5 minutes.

Mine took a little less than 5 minutes.
I may have been a little excited, but it seemed that the email took a long time to arrive. It felt like 20 minutes, but it was more like 5.
I am very, very geeked for Kanopy, and getting it now is like an early Christmas.
Three things:
1. The email verification was slow for me, too. Like strapped to the back of a creaky old Galapagos tortoise. Okay, maybe not that bad. But slow enough. 5 to 7 minutes or so.
2. I love that performance rights come with this--this is going to be great for educators.
3. I would love flair, but not Ric Flair, because my corneas are damaged enough. (Thanks, Tim!)
My verification take just a few seconds... thanks to whomever turned it up a notch! For a good indie film to watch, check out "Barracuda" by my friend and filmmaker Jason Cortlund. It was nominated for two major SXSW awards and won the grand jury prize for best narrative feature at the Oak Cliff Film Fest. I'm thrilled to have this as a MLS service!
The email verification was really fast for me, just a few seconds. The whole sign-up process took me about a minute. Kanopy looks awesome!! And I'm always ready for some flair! :)
