Public Information Kiosks

Print
Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Placing Mobile library kiosks in public venues to support Library Unbound project.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
By placing library kiosks supplying books & DVDs inside or outside grocery stores, drug stores, doctor's offices, airports and other facilities, we would increase market penetration, circulation, library visibility and hopefully market retention.
Why should we select this project?:
Several other library staff have suggested similar projects. I am suggesting that we place kiosks actually in the community rather than outside the library building which is where Norman Public has placed it's kiosk.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
The model used by Norman Public cost $200,000 in 2013 provided by EnvisionWare. Other models are available. Cost and restocking would be the main issues.

Yes!
I really like this idea. It just seems like such an obvious (albeit expensive and complex) way to give the library a presence in the community. I think its costs would extend beyond the startup cost of installing these kiosks, however. We'd have to account for maintenance and some degree of collection management, I imagine. How many such kiosks do you estimate that we would be able to install given your proposed budget estimate?

yes!!
Having spent time waiting on a loved one to come out of surgery, I think adding a kiosk to major hospitals' surgery waiting rooms would be great. Especially if we geared a few towards our younger members, to help parents entertain those little ones who don't understand why they are there in the first place.
