Book Vending Machine

Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Book Vending Machines at popular pedestrian destinations throughout the area to increase market penetration
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
Book vending machines are available in a wide variety of expense levels - from a 500 book capacity machine for $35,000 to the $200,000 24-hour library used by the Pioneer System. By placing book vending machines loaded with current bestsellers in areas with high pedestrian traffic (ex. Bricktown outside the baseball stadium, Bleu Garten, outside a Paseo art gallery, etc), we will be increasing our market penetration with a minimal increase of man-hours to restock the machines. The machines could also function as wifi hotspots for public use and would greatly increase library visibility in the community.
Why should we select this project?:
With market penetration being a core goal, putting the library in high-visibility points-of-sale is a crucial technique. Vending machines are a relatively low-cost way to capitalize on library services and visibility.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Safety is always a concern for any piece of equipment in permanent public access. A webcam would be sufficient to monitor any damage that may be done and prosecute vandals or thieves. Since the machines would not have cash collection, the risk should be minimal.
