Embedded librarians in Academic Libraries

Print
Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Set up a Metrolibrary desk or point of contact in a local college or university library like UCO or OCCC.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
Metrolibrary staff could spend some time each week at a desk or contact point in a college or university library, issuing library cards and helping students use the services of the Metrolibrary system. This would help make students aware of libraries close to their institutions, which might increase their use of those libraries. It would also help make them aware of digital services available to them from the Metrolibrary system. It could also result in a close, symbiotic working relationship between academic libraries and the public library.
Why should we select this project?:
It has the potential to provide increased benefits to library users and increase library use.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
This may be impractical due to staffing limitations, but perhaps the academic libraries could work with the public library to cross-train staff.
Source of Inspiration:

When I emailed my manager, Ben Mead-Harvey at the Village Library about this idea, he replied "the InterReach component of Library Unbound mentions “Embedded librarians in government agencies, local nonprofits, and other groups.”

This is my suggestion for a pilot project.

Yes!
As a young adult trying to start her education again I am in love with this idea. I know that Rose State in MWC has had to downsize their library while construction on a new learning center is being built. So being able to tell students that they have other places to go and get research materials and other information is super helpful. I do know that the college libraries have a reciprocal card called the OK Share card, but having the help at a community library is super helpful. Especially when the bigger universities libraries are large and somewhat daunting.

Having worked in a very small
Having worked in a very small college library (approximately 1,200 students or so), this could be especially valuable at community colleges or other smaller private universities that don't have extensive collections like many larger public/private schools. We often had to tell students that the material wasn't there (and they didn't want to/couldn't wait for ILL), so it would be great to have access to a much larger collection.
