Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Many of our current members are part of the homeschool community.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
I think we could host "expo" like events highlighting the many services we have that could be of value to homeschoolers. Or even set up booths at the homeschool conventions. We have SO much more to offer than books and DVDs. We could send librarians to Co-Op classes, we could host spelling bees, and Science Fairs. The sky is the limit with what we have to offer.
Why should we select this project?:
Data from the 2007 NHES survey show an estimated 1.5 million students (1,508,000) were homeschooled in the United States in the spring of 2007.In addition, the percentage of the school-age population that was homeschooled increased
from 2.2 percent in 2003 to 2.9 percent in 2007. The increase in the homeschooling rate (from 1.7 percent in 1999 to
2.2 percent in 2003 to 2.9 percent in 2007) represents a 74 percent relative increase over the 8-year period and a
36 percent relative increase since 2003.3. In 2015 it is estimated that there are 681,563 homeschooled children in Oklahoma. (http://a2zhomeschooling.com/thoughts_opinions_home_school/numbers_homeschooled_students/)
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Enough staff to run programs, and having staff that is knowledgeable about the homeschool community, and/ or training staff to meet those needs.
