Cultural passes available for check out

Print
Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Make available general admission passes to local cultural institutions that can be checked out using a library card in good standing.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
By making general admission passes to local cultural institutions available to check out, we would not only establish new community partnerships and build on existing ones, but we would also enable library members to visit cultural institutions that they may not otherwise have been able to visit. It's the same principle behind providing access to books, movies, journals, etc. that members might otherwise not be able to afford.
Why should we select this project?:
Just as we put members in touch with worlds beyond their own by way of books, movies, and music, so, too, can we put them in touch with works by Matisse, the skeleton of the world's largest Apatosaurus, and a plasma globe.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Cost, lack of willing partner, infrastructure.
Source of Inspiration:
Partner/Supporting Departments:

Very cool!
It would be worth talking to OKCMOA about this!

Love it!
This is a great way we can partner in the community and possibly apply for grant funding!!!

Sounds good to me
Maybe the OKC Philharmonic would provide some tickets to the Discovery Family Series.

Wonderful Opportunity
This is a feature at many libraries already, and I think it's a great opportunity for a number of reasons: it gives us an opportunity to educate our members about what cultural resources are available in our communities, it gives our members easy access to these resources, and it creates support networks between us and these institutions. I think this last point is crucial--we need to be collaborating with other informal educational institutions. I mean, our goal is to increase market penetration with reference to our library system, but even more fundamentally, we want to engage our community and challenge our community members to be smarter. MLS is fantastic, but collaboration is the way to go if we really want to see this happen.

SFPL Summer Stride
Have you seen how the San Francisco Public Library has partnered this summer to offer free shuttles from their locations to local national parks? I would love to see us do something like that as well. Here's their summer guide. Details are on pages 8 & 9. http://sfpl.org/uploads/files/pdfs/StrideGuide_2016.pdf

re: summer stride
I hadn't seen it but thanks for sharing, Kate! I think ED would be a great location to pilot shuttles to Shannon Miller Park via piggy back, shoulders, horsey, or plenty of other ways I'm sure I'm forgetting at the moment!

Most noticeably...
you forgot wheelbarrow, three legged race, and group handstand!

See, I knew there were more!

Seattle Public Library
SPL library cards provide access to Seattle-area museums. It would be worth asking what concessions local-area attractions could provide for MLS cardholders. Even if it's just a $5.00 price break on an annual pass or a free pretzel from the concessions stand, it would be nice for a library card to have value at venues outside of the library.

This is a great idea. The
This is a great idea. The library card could be another kind of Keep it Local card or student discount, with area businesses giving discounts to members. I love the idea of having passes to check out, but it would be great for there to be little perks or discounts in addition if the passes were all checked out.
