Young Adult Services Retreat Minutes for March 3, 2010

YA Services Retreat
Date: March 3,2010

In attendance: Dana Morrow, Eric King, John Hilbert, Heidi Port, Lindsay Engle, Angela Thorton, Barbara Johnson, Cheryl, Mallory Weigl, Cindy Selinger, Teresa Matthews, Melissa Weathers, Kim Edwards, Angela Hill, Emily Williams, Anita Roseler, Kellie Bradford, Kelley Riha

Heidi started off the meeting with a World Café to brainstorm Outreach ideas.

Announcements:

Programmers discussed a text list for those who could receive and send text messages.  Emily took up a list and emailed it to those wishing to participate.  A closed group Facebook page was set up for programmers and outreach to chat back and forth with ideas and programming questions.

Emily reminded programmers of ODL’s wiki, chat, and Twitter accounts.

There will be a Wizard Rock tour this summer and the groups will be in the OKC area July 24th if anyone would like to host the program.

Emily will begin to visit the Juvenile Detention centers again.  Once per quarter, and if any programmer would like to visit as well they need to contact her at outreach.

If anyone has any programs they would like on the MLS Facebook, Twitter or Teen pages send the info to Emily, Kim Terry or Kelly Bradford.  Dana and Outreach are going to look into bookmarks to promote the new pages but everyone needs to talk them up until them.  The more hits they get the more exposure they will get on the front tabs of the website.

Examples of Savannah Mitchell’s art were shown and discussed for this summer’s programs and any additional programs the branches would like to do.

Emily discussed the books available from outreach for book clubs and if anyone wanted a list she would email them to them.

Discussion of new games we might want Outreach to look at for gaming equipment.  Some were already purchased and Emily would look for the others.  Any other suggestions could be emailed.

Encouraged those who have not already done so, to put the Building a Reading City signature on their email.  Dana sent out an email with instructions and Emily can walk you though it as well.

Emily reminded programmers to input Meeting Room info for summer programming.

Emily is working on a grant for the YALSA convention in New Mexico, she’ll keep us informed.

Sharing and Brainstorming:

Discussion of the third annual I can’t believe I shot that contest (DN) and the second annual Peep contest(ED).  Both these contests will be coming up in the next three months and art work is either ready or waiting for MAC.  This will be distributed to branches.  Kim would like more entries and wants everyone to encourage filmmakers.

Cheryl has been doing an African American Read in.

Mallory suggested we see about purchasing a die cut of a surfer for teen summer reading.

John brought up the need for a mobile laptop lab to travel around the libraries.  With the increased need to help customers and lack of computer assistants with one on one time it’s really important that librarians and techs have a way to teach multiple classes.  They also need computers that are not tied to the network as a large number of customer questions are about Overdrive media and staff has no way to teach  a class or show customers how to access and use the programs.  Internal IT is limited to help customers and it is becoming a growing frustration with customers and staff.  If librarians would list the programs and uses for the computers and email them to Emily it would help determine if this needs to be budgeted, what funds to use, and if we can get a grant if the system will not provide them.

Edmond’s tech made a handout of Overdrive for eBooks that Teresa will send out.

John has been working with a 4H member who has taught a few classes for him.  The guy is trying for more grant money so he may be available for other programming.

Lindsay has been working on an Urban Garden.  This may have to turn into a container garden as the ground was poisoned a few years ago to rid the landscape of bushes.  DC is also in the process of learning its fate when the Community Center is closed in 2011 for remodel.

Sequoyah nominees were discussed as well as other award winners for 2010.

Web Updates:

Kelly Bradford gave us a tour of the new teen pages.  We discussed bookmarks to promote this, explored what is available.  She encouraged everyone to contact her with ideas and needs and will work on incorporating it into future web functions.

Heidi also showed us the new summer volunteer pages both for them and for intranet use by staff.

Discussed our volunteer hour spreadsheets and what resources were available.

There is also on MLS Volunteers YouTube, short videos that prospective volunteers can watch to see what kind of jobs are available at the libraries.

Kelley R.  Updated the programmers on Artist Pages and what info she is looking for on the applications for performer/artist paperwork.
