MLS Safety & Health Program
It is the position of the Metropolitan Library System that all accidents and injuries are preventable. While the organization has the obligation for providing a safe and healthful workplace, each employee of our organization has a personal and vital responsibility to contribute to safe work performance. Through such joint effort, an accident and injury free work environment will be achieved. Our organization believes that it is in the best interests of all to protect the safety and health of its employee
Safety and Health Management Leadership
It is our objective to demonstrate how top management will actively and visibly participate in safety and health issues and set a good example also, to seek and encourage active participation of all employees in the overall safety and health program.
Assigned Responsibility, Authority and Accountability
The following information states the assignments of responsibility and authority for the four programs included. The Chair of the Safety Committee shall have overall responsibility for the program.
- Exposure Control:
- Managers of Library Operations are responsible for maintaining bloodborne pathogen supplies.
- Human Resources will oversee all medical records, HBV vaccines and will determine workplace exposures.
- Library staff are responsible for clean up and decontamination.
- Hazard Communication:
- Master SDS file will be kept with the Safety Coordinator. The Safety Coordinator will be responsible to make and maintain the master file.
- Maintenance will keep deactivated SDS in a separate folder.
- The Safety Committee will oversee all chemicals being ordered.
- Safety Committee will approve all new chemicals. The committee will decide if a new chemical requesting to be purchased is the best and safest available.
- SDS will be assembled in three ring binders.
- Lockout/Tagout:
- Authorized employees will be maintenance technicians. Please see Section VI, Lockout/Tagout Procedures and Attachment A – Authorized Personnel.
- Personal Protective Equipment:
- The Manager of Facilities Maintenance orders all PPE.
- The Safety Committee is responsible to oversee the PPE Hazard Assessment and certify/review it at least annually.
- Library Manager will fill out a purchase order for PPE and send it to The Manager of Facilities Maintenance.
