Background

These procedures are intended to ensure that MLS meets all safety training requirements prescribed by the Oklahoma Department of Labor, Public Employees Occupation Safety and Health (PEOSH) Division.

Procedures

  1.  Each library/department will ensure a hard copy of the Library’s Safety Manual and the Safety Data Sheet notebooks are accessible to all employees. Managers will ensure that all employees know the location of the hard copy manual within the library/department.
  2. All employees may access the Library’s Safety Manual via the Intranet and an online database of Safety Data Sheets
  3. All employees are required to complete safety training each calendar quarter. The required training must be completed by the end of each quarter. Employees performing certain job functions may require additional training (i.e. Lockout/Tagout, Forklift Operation, etc.). When additional training is required for a position, the manager will notify their employees.
  4. Employees will complete Safety Training by utilizing the Library’s Learning Management System (LMS); all training records will be maintained with the LMS. Managers will ensure that employees have access to a computer in order to complete the required training.
  5. Newly hired employees will be required to complete safety training during onboarding and training will include the following:
    • General Safety Orientation
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Types of Gloves
    • COVID-19—Safe Workplace Practices
    • Hazardous Communication
    • Bloodborne Pathogens
    • Lockout/Tagout (Facilities Maintenance employees only)
  6. If an employee cannot attend onboarding, the manager will be responsible for ensuring the employee completes the required safety training during the employee’s first week of employment. If the employee’s first day on the job falls on the last day of a quarter (March 31, June 30, September 30 or December 31), safety training will be required to be completed on that day.
  7. Safety training is considered work time and must be conducted during an employee’s regular work schedule.
  8. An employee failing to meet one quarter of required safety training will receive a needs improvement rating on the Professional Development competency of their annual performance review. An employee failing to meet two or more required safety trainings will receive a does not meet expectations rating on the Professional Development competency of their annual performance review. Failure to complete required safety trainings may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
