Speed Dating at the Library!

Print
Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Speed dating at the library will provide a fun event for current members, and entice new and/or lapsed members to come to the library.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
The library would offer a speed dating event for the public. We could advertise through www.meetup.com and other social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to attract customers that don't frequent the library, but are looking for ways to meet other members of the community. The cost for refreshments would be minimal, and the event could easily be run by two or three members of the staff. We would advise the participants to bring their favorite book to carry with them from station to station, as well as have a few cards with conversation starters. Before the event began, we would talk about the services the library offers, and offer to sign the participants up for library cards. We would set up several long tables, with people sitting across from one another. After three minutes, people on the designated "move" side of the table would move over one space, and begin a new interaction with the new person sitting across from them. Once everyone has had a chance to meet one another, the event would end. Reading articles about other libraries that have held this event, one thing that stood out was the number of participants that remarked that they had not been in a library in a long time, and were glad to be back. This event would help with market penetration, as well as foster a greater sense of community.
Why should we select this project?:
This project would be a great way to draw in millennials. In fact, the flexibility of the project opens up a wide range of possibilities. Not only is there general speed dating, but other libraries have done speed dating for seniors, as well as friend speed dating.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
N/A
Source of Inspiration:

From what I understand, our library system has held a similar event in the past. Other libraries across the country have also held this event with great success.

I pioneered this type of program in the US a few years back. Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to chat about what challenges and successes we had way back when. I will say I got invited to a wedding within a year. :) http://www.fayobserver.com/living/weekender/speedy-singles/article_02b6a8fd-1ae9-53f2-b691-d7ba6d1c91a6.html

another variant...
Another version of this concept is Speed dating for friends. A podcast I love has done this for "mom friends" and I've toyed with the idea of offering it as a program-- caregivers go to the speed dating program while kids are engaged in a craft/storytime etc. It might be fun to incorporate into this idea. http://longestshortesttime.com/speed-dating-for-mom-friends-faq/ I know that there have been traditional speed dating events through MLS before (maybe 5 years ago?) I'm sure there are individuals who have experience putting on this type of programming and would be happy to help!
