Describe Project and Impact:
A marked day during the year where we celebrate those who founded our libraries with incentives to bring folks in the door
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
We would designate one day each year (perhaps it isn't always the same day?) where we acknowledge the history of each library. We could promote our histories on social media, with posters, offer some sort of commemorative event or activity - recognize those who have a special place in the founding or naming of our libraries. This day could be partnered with (not each year, but once in a while) an amnesty from fines day so that folks are coming in, celebrating and renewing their relationship with the libraries.
Why should we select this project?:
It provides a sense of community both local to each neighborhood and throughout the system while also encouraging folks to come back into the libraries. If we promoted and led up to it with prizes, asking folks to return materials (no questions asked)and perhaps some special programming on this day - it could be come an MLS tradition.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Not all libraries are named/have founders
Source of Inspiration:
Several groups have been asking if we would have an amnesty day. Also, the woman who donated land for the Village Library is still alive and the Village friends are buying a small plaque to honor her family for their lobby. It might be nice to honor all of our founders periodically if not all at once. If we make a big deal out of it - and give them reasons to come in - it's a hook.
