#bookface contest planned for March to coincide with Teen Tech Month. Youth Media Awards was this week, check the email from Janet, it has a link to the winners. Send instagram photos to Emily for the library’s instagram.
Megan Stanek: Greatschools.org. This site is a new site to Oklahoma that will hold lots of information about our schools. You can look through the site for pretty much any information about the school. The site is fairly easy to use. Please share this information with parents.
Kellie Delaney: My Metrolibrary has been updated and a new login area has been debuted. Signup and Spaces has a few updates going through at this time. Excited about #Bookface. Overdrive will be adding a “Teen Reading Room”. Planning has done a great job with organizing all the tax forms and information to make it easy to find what you need to help your customers.
Heidi Port: Summer Volunteers – What we can do to ensure their success for the summer and to help create their success for the rest of their lives. Booksale is coming up, if you haven’t signed up to volunteer do so now!
Sharing
Cheryl: Read Monument 14 and really enjoyed it – it’s the beginning of a dystopian trilogy, said it was a quick enjoyable read. Hiring Bharthi Srinivasan to teach a water color class.
Sarah: Has been working hard to make the Teen Space at RE more inviting.
Annie: Just finished reading the Gregor the Overlander series and really enjoyed them. CH is working on cleaning out the backroom before they close for remodel and they are willing to give away a metric ton of glitter and a half ton of ribbon to anybody who might need it. Homework help has been great – had 10 volunteers on Monday, most of which were teens. LEGO Club is a hit and looking forward to After School At Your Library.
Suzette: Working on some STEAM programming and intends to let these programs flow right into the SR theme of heroes. The teen volunteers seem to be really stepping up and taking responsibility for their “jobs”, it seems like they really want to be there and enjoy being part of the group.
Debbie: Bethany just had their 50th Anniversary this last week, they had a reception and a great amount of community support. Doing programs on origami gift boxes and miniature gardening.
LaVetta: Will be promoting the Black History Month programs with D’We Williams on Fox News this weekend. Mr. Stinky Cheese will be here in March for the Spring Fling. In April Northwest, Midwest City, and Downtown will screen a documentary about the children of the civil rights movement. Neighborhood Arts schedule for this summer is almost finished.
Elisabeth: After School Art program really helped build a relationship with the teens this time around. They went from being strangers to being friends at the end of the program. Community Center next door just opened and Sally and Elisabeth are working to build a partnership with them. VI will have a new manager starting in March.
Meg: Trying to get YALSA to form a Teen Mental Health Group. Having programs on how to get a summer job and intro to yoga. Excited about upcoming program where will have a modern day etiquette speaker, and hair and makeup stylists (Meg said the name of the program and I can’t read my own writing….) This program will be at CT also, both in the beginning of May.
Kristin: Have been giving leftover SR books to schools and other places that would be able to give them to children. Britton School sent thank you cards and a handmade poster. The Spring semester for 1-2-3 Play With Me, the flyers and posters are bilingual and we have either bilingual facilitators or translators at 3 locations (CH, SO, AL). Kristin spoke with one of the translators after the program concluded at SO and she was told that 5 of the families that had come to the program came because the posters were bilingual. This made the customers feel more welcomed at the events. Will have a group to create sample displays for the summer and OUT will supply all things needed for displays. The weekly emails from Summer Reader will be changed into a newsletter format.
Dana: Had questions about dealing with tough teens. Emily will look into having Jane Humphries out to teach a training again.
Vanessa: Working on re-gearing the Teen programming. Will have Mine Craft and Chess Club. In May doing Free Comic Book Day and party. Plans to have some awesome cosplay and to use this to encourage participation for SR.
Mary: Having a program with comic book artist to show teens how to create their own comic books. Water color class with Bharthi. Did a program called Library Explorers, this was a STEAM based program that was well received. Talked about incorporating more actual journaling into Journal Junkies programs. A company that rents huge games, some are $30 each: EZ Fun Co. http://ezfunco.com/ Phone: 405.286.2446, Address: 223 W. Britton Rd. OKC, OK 73114
John: Soonercon D&D program planned again. Says this a great group to have host D&D tournaments and that they do it on a volunteer basis.
Anna: Has had lots of awesome book displays lately. Started a “Random Fandom” club where they celebrate a different type of fandom each month. January was Dr. Who, February is Deathnote, March is Minecraft, and April is Sherlock. Having BYOG gaming club, and currently her teens are obsessed with the board game Clue.
Taryn: Having a college prep workshop. Will be starting Homework Help (AL, CH, and SO will do a flyer all together to advertise their homework help programs). Doing a Vine Video contest.
LaVetta: MLS was featured in the School Library Journal for our kids Yoga, Kristin Williamson was interviewed. Emily Williams was invited to be part of the collaborative SR planning group. There will be a new Outreach Supply Catalog on the intranet soon. This is how you will order SR supplies this year. LaVetta suggests having your person who already orders supplies add this to their list of supplies needing ordered to encourage full ownership of the program by all employees. There will be a few changes to how SR is done this year, mainly with the drawings NOT all being held at the end of the summer. More information to come.
