Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Additional Contributors:
Kellie Delaney
Describe Project and Impact:
An author project reinforcing the importance of libraries in the era of eBooks and self-publishing.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
The Oklahoma Writes author project is modeled after the successful and popular Soon to be Famous Author Project of Illinois. This project will establish the library as an incubator for emerging writers by serving as advocates, distributors and promotors of self-published content. Through partnership with the SELF-e program, submissions would be vetted by professional editors and the approved titles added to our existing eBook platforms. Future expansion could include annual awards for the best of each genre or a statewide author tour as well as formal writing workshops. A companion Expresso machine for printing could be purchased as a separate project as well.
Why should we select this project?:
Self-publishing has moved from the realm of vanity to the multi-million dollar indie publishing industry and author events draw crowds into the thousands. This program would reinforce the library’s traditional role in support of reading and offer our members a creative outlet.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Staff involvement would be small, consisting mainly of coordination efforts initially, but would need work reallocated during the awards or tour process. Marketing and social media would be essential.
