Training Times ~ May & June

Where has the time gone ~ Summer is almost here and that means Summer Reading 2018 is here too!

Summer Reading Training is wrapping up and MLS is reaching 100% compliance for this required training. But why?

ODL requires training to be eligible for state aid funds: Title 405. Oklahoma Department of Libraries, Chapter 25. State Aid Grants to Public Libraries (F) All library directors and all personnel who work more than twenty (20) hours a week must attend at least one continuing education program each year. Staff in library systems or public libraries serving over 25,000 may meet this requirement with in-house training.

ODL told MLS what types of training will and will not fulfill that requirement and safety training does not fulfill that requirement.  The year they told us that was at the end of the year and we almost did not receive state aid funds.  As a result of that situation, MLS made the decision several years ago that each year Summer Reading training is required for all staff, regardless of the number of hours worked weekly.  This approach helps us ensure that

  1. All employees are aware of the summer reading program basics to discuss and share with his/her co-workers, customers, family and friends what the library has to offer and
  2. We always fulfill the annual ODL training requirement.

The Performance Development Program Training is underway....

Learning and Development (L & D) and the Performance Development Planning committee are training supervisors on the new Performance Development (PD) Program the last three weeks of May. This initiative will not only help and prepare supervisors, it will also help the System move forward with merit increases in February 2019 (if the budget is approved) instead of waiting until 2020 for a possible merit increase.

After this day-long training, supervisors will have the information, tools, and resources to begin training their staff members June 1, 2018. All staff members must be trained on the PD Program by June 30, 2018. Staff members can expect their supervisor to reach out to them to discuss this required training.

Attendees will also learn about the Point of Sale system and have a chance to practice their skills in an interactive environment.

Active Shooter: by FEMA - Online

An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined area or other populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly.
All employees can help prevent and prepare for potential active shooter situations. This course provides guidance to individuals, including managers and employees, so that they can prepare to respond to an active shooter situation.
This course is not written for law enforcement officers, but for non-law enforcement employees. The material may provide law enforcement officers information on recommended actions for non-law enforcement employees to take should they be confronted with an active shooter.
