Training Times - April 2013

Announcements

Hello Staff!

Welcome to another Training Times update.  This month will offer plenty of great trainings for staff, including classes on Child and Young Adulthood Development.  These two trainings will be taught by Dr. Jane Humphries, adjunct instructor at UCO and SNU.  The class on Child Development will take place on April 24 at the Midwest City Library.  The class on Young Adulthood Development will happen on May 8 at the Downtown Library.  For more information on enrollment and class descriptions, please see below.

Due to demand, we are having another Saturday Prepare Foundation Training at Almonte Library on Saturday, April 27 from 8:00 AM - Noon.

For the first time, we are offering a new Prepare module on Setting Effective Limits.  This training also expands on the foundation course in dealing with difficult behavior and maintaining a civil, respectful, and safe work environment.

Again, please take a look at the training descriptions below and links if you wish to enroll for trainings in April or May.  We hope to see you in class!

Trainer Spotlight

Linda Hyams has been teaching various trainings for the MLS since 2005, including Incident Report Training and Prepare courses. This month she will co-teach a Prepare foundation course and Prepare - Setting Effective Limits with Stacy Schrank.

Linda Hyams is the Security Manager at the Downtown Library.  Before coming to work for the MLS, Linda was in the Air Force and also worked as an IG investigator, a cop, and worked for the TSA.  Linda began her career with the MLS in November 2003 as a Materials Selection Tech.  She was also an assistant in Human Resources before moving to her current position in Security.

Linda has a big family!  She enjoys spending time with her husband (Alex) and son (Tristan), walking and running with her four dogs, playing with her three cats, and volunteering for the animal rescue.  When she's not busy with her family, you might find her sewing or reading.

Some interesting facts about Linda include: being born in Germany to a German mother and Irish father, married to an Englishman from London, a 4th generation military veteran, and one of the first women to work in the avionics field for the USAF.

When asked what she enjoys most about working for the MLS, Linda replied the "employees."  One reason why she enjoys teaching training classes is because she gets to "learn something new from the staff and interact with them in a different way."

Class Descriptions

Effective Listening Skills - SGR

Although everyone talks and listens to one another, they may not be communicating effectively. Most people are so busy thinking of what they want to say next that they often miss important cues for success.  Effective Listening Skills instructs participants in the art of active listening.  Listening has become a "neglected" communication skill. Active listening is a difficult skill to learn, but the payoff can be great.  Participants explore the process of listening more effectively and learn specific tools to maximize interpersonal communication.

Prepare - Setting Effective Limits - Linda Hyams & Stacy Schrank

Setting limits is one of the most powerful tools that professionals have to promote positive behavior change for their clients, students, patients, etc... Knowing there are limits on their behavior helps the individuals in your charge to feel safe.  It also helps them to learn to make appropriate choices.

Intro to Child Development - Dr. Jane Humphries

The content will include a base of research and theory, milestones of growth and development, the sequential stages of child development as well as the domains of development. Prepare - Foundation Course - Linda Hyams & Stacy Schrank

Foundation course developed by the Crisis Prevention Institute, Prepare Training is designed to promote respect, service, and safety at work and can be used with customers, co-workers, and others you come in contact with in your life. Consisting of nine modules, the highly interactive training focuses on helping the participants learn how to: recognize the early waning signs of anger or hostility; use personal space, body language, and paraverbal communicatrion to relieve tension and defuse hostility; and foster respectful relationships and promote positive outcomes by using empathic listening skills, and apply the skills and strategies learned to realistic confrontational situations you may encounter in the work place.

Intro to Young Adult Development - Dr. Jane Humphries
