3/30/2022 Safety Committee Meeting

Items for Discussion:

  • Introductions of members and guests.  Let group know Stephany Dowd has left MLS. Attendees: Jeff Cover (HUM), Erin Bedford (PSA), Galen Boydstun (CP), Stephen Butts (MTC), Kevin Hammond (SEC), Angel Suhrstedt (DC), Randy Wayland (MC). Guests:  Brandon Bredy (Compsource), Rusty Dye (Insurica).
  • Assign committee member to take/post meeting minutes (Galen)
  • Update & Discussion on workers’ compensation injuries (Jeff): Six active claims. We have 3 new ones since last meeting.  The new ones are: 1- slip & fall, 2-strain & sprain.
  • Review and Discuss Quarterly Safety Checklists: Steve will work with Kristin Sutliff on addressing outstanding maintenance requests submitted.  Erin stated that managers should be reporting any maintenance issues to maintenance when they discover them on the checklists.
  • Review Incidents/Accidents (None to report currently)
  • Issues with handling sharps.  Discussed at last meeting to move forward with this for the new fiscal year (start 7/1/2022).  Need to put together a proposal to add to budget for next year.  Steve will need help besides Kristin.  Can 1 or 2 of you help as well? Galen will assist group. Jeff will have Kristin set up meeting with company to confirm details of service and cost.  Original cost quoted to MLS was about $6K annually for maintaining and disposal of hazardous materials bins.
  • Discuss Safety Manual status.
    • Draft is with Metro Tech.  They are bringing Jeff a final draft to review prior to them printing the manuals.  Draft should be delivered by next week (4/8).
    • Should have manuals printed and ready to distribute by May.
    • Have safety consultant tentatively scheduled to speak at MLS June XChange meeting (6/14) to discuss new manuals and what changes they made to it.
  • Safety topics at monthly staff meetings.  Inconsistent submission of monthly sign off logs with maximum participation needs follow up. Group felt that engaging in monthly departmental or 1 on 1 meetings with staff is better received than blanketed sign off sheet postings. Interaction with staff is beneficial to retaining topic information. Work with Brandon and Rusty on ways to make presentations more engaging in future. Need to make sure that we align safety topics with issues we are facing in our daily tasks.
  • Safety Skills training courses.  Need to let Milissa know which ones we would like to keep/remove from our offerings to the employees. Jeff will send out list of curriculums to committee members to review and give feedback.
  • New safety checklist forms from Brandon with CompSource. Erin provided me with some feedback from the RD’s. I still need to meet with Brandon, Erin and Amanda to review this further.
  • Chemical Inventory Lists—Will be sent out by 4/4 to managers to complete and return by 5/4. Previous year’s lists will be presented for review and editing.
  • Fire Drills/Evacuation Plans—Jeff will be working with Kevin Hammond (Security Manager) to put together plans for this, especially at the DN site. Will work in accordance with information presented in new safety manuals. Also, need to work towards having branches and departments conduct consistent/pertinent drills.  Steve said that evacuation signs should be posted at all locations.
  • Audits/walk-throughs Conducted walk-through here at Midwest City today after the meeting.  Brandon and Rusty led the group through this exercise.   Brandon will be sending Jeff a summary of his findings to share with group. Goal is to continue these audits in the future at other locations.
  • Next Safety Committee Mtg. on Wed. 5/25/2022 @ 2:00pm.  Group decided to meet at the Northwest branch on that date.  Future meetings will be conducted the last Wednesday of the month--every other month.
  • Closing Comments or Questions:

Idea was brought up by group to look into possibly bringing on a FT staff member to serve as a Safety Coordinator in the future.
